Does quintile 4 count as contextual? I thought that was quite high

For Birmingham they look at the Attainment 8 and if it is below 54.8 then you are eligible for contextual and you get points based on the polar quintile. So yes, quintile 4 is quite high but still allocated points for UOB.

I think we both know what the outcome will be!
However, she is fully prepared to take a gap year if it doesn’t happen this cycle.
Her argument is that she would regret not applying to where she actually wants to go.
As much as it grinds your particular gears, you have to admire her optimism/naivety/bloody mindedness not to be told!

also, note how Cardiff rank very highly on Medpapa’s tables on the ‘which medical school’ thread!

VICTIM

We absolutely need a cross section of society. We need Drs who understand the struggles of their patients. Not just the grammar/private school ‘smart’ kids who have never set foot on a council estate

best are those who come from a non privileged background.

I for one am glad that my smart girl who attended a non selective state school will get some recognition for achieving her grades without the privilege of a grammar/private school

Speaking as someone who lives in a disadvantaged area (contextual) but got into a Private school off the back of the hard work of my parents, I find it irksome that others would be quick to judge me based on where I found my education. I think we should treat students fairly and not assume an outcome based on the educational system they happened to find themselves in, which was no fault of their own.

Question.

Why did your parents feel they had to send you to private school?

Do you think maybe because they wanted to give you an advantage?

And as a parent I am 100% not criticising that.
But that advantage does not make you equal to your peers who attended the local state school.

If you live in a disadvantaged area, would the postcode you live in not be taken into consideration at most schools?
It is a bit unfair that some schools do require multiple factors to be met to consider you as a ‘contextual applicant’ eg. postcode + school. I think the most fair way would be to holistically consider every aspect individually of a persons background compared to their performance. I actually think universities like Oxford are a great example, they seem to be quite fair and holistic in their process
That’s also why i do disagree with ‘going to a state school’ being a good way to consider if applicants are ‘contextual’ - it should be based off their school performance compared to national performance because this is actually an evidence based way to consider a persons educational outcome! and it of course should aim to put them at an even playing field, not give them an advantage.

It was more a case of my personality not meshing well with the local community. I was quite fragile as a kid but overall the standard of education was the same. People who attended the local comprehensive came out with a similar level of education when given in proportion to their efforts, so I don't necessarily agree with that point. However, I can see how in particular areas of the country the standard of education you receive may vary depending on if you are fee-paying or not. I was on financial assistance for most of my time there and my grandparent's pension when directly to my school fund so we're not exactly minted :/ The only reason I managed to get in was because I performed well in my entrance examinations.

@Medpapa I'm at a independent school on a full academic bursary - I worked hard to earn my place but now feel that I'm being penalised. Some of my friends are well off but there are others from working class backgrounds. Their parents made a choice to forgo holidays/cars etc so their children could get a better education.

I understand that we want our workforce to represent soceity, be it medics or MP's. However, we might be at a point where we are over compensating. I wanted to apply to Birmingham, had max 8.5 (UCAT+GCSE) but not having any contextual points put me off. The irony is that if I had attended a state school, I would have had max contextual points and as a result my application would've been a lot stronger!
