@Medpapa I'm at a independent school on a full academic bursary - I worked hard to earn my place but now feel that I'm being penalised. Some of my friends are well off but there are others from working class backgrounds. Their parents made a choice to forgo holidays/cars etc so their children could get a better education.

I understand that we want our workforce to represent soceity, be it medics or MP's. However, we might be at a point where we are over compensating. I wanted to apply to Birmingham, had max 8.5 (UCAT+GCSE) but not having any contextual points put me off. The irony is that if I had attended a state school, I would have had max contextual points and as a result my application would've been a lot stronger!

8.5 is well over last years cut off, you’d get an interview with that. I think that’s a little exaggerative, of course birmingham do accept non contextual students. You would pretty much be guaranteed an interview since you meet the max non contextual score??? Also it doesn’t really matter how strong your score is past the point of reaching the cut off, you won’t be advantaged for a score of 9.5 compared to 8.5 because every person above that cut off receives an interview - after that it’s based off your interview + sjt only
Dont be put off applying because of people saying they don’t accept private school students, they 100% do.

also unless ur welsh you had to have gone to a LOW PERFORMING state school, not just any state school

I agree with some of what you say.

I don’t like your ‘anti smart’ comment - it suggests that those from a state school aren’t smart. I for one am glad that my smart girl who attended a non selective state school will get some recognition for achieving her grades without the privilege of a grammar/private school.

I am quite happy to go head to head on the humble beginnings but this isn’t a competition 🤣

I have worked with many medical students and medics and imho the best are those who come from a non privileged background.

We absolutely need a cross section of society. We need Drs who understand the struggles of their patients. Not just the grammar/private school ‘smart’ kids who have never set foot on a council estate.

acting like some people in a grammar school are not extremely underprivileged if your daughter actually is underprivileged I understand but going to a non selective state school shouldn't be prioritised rather contextual criteria such as postcodes etc
hi, this I have a question about personal statements - my ps is under 4000 characters, but when I put paragraph breaks, as in a blank line, separating paragraphs in UCAS, it makes me go over the line limit by 4 lines, and I can't prevent that unless I cut out nearly a whole paragraph.
is it really bad if I dont have clear paragraph breaks? in the preview, each of the paragraphs do begin on a new line, but there's not a blank line separating them.

anyone got any thoughts ??
