Exam effected due to strikes

As you guys know that there were going to be train strikes this week which are now suspended. When the strikes were announced, I received an email from my university saying that if the strikes will go ahead the exam will be after two weeks however if they will be suspended the exam will take place on the previously set date.
Then they said next day that most of the students want to do the exam on the previously set date despite the strikes. However, a few can not and those who can’t, they can submit an EC to do the exam in late summer assessment period.
Then the news next day was that strikes are suspended.

I am not able to travel to the exam partially bcz i haven’t found an accommodation yet and I’m living very far from university. Also, due to the university different decision I couldn’t study my best during this week and I think it will be better for me to take the exam in late summer.

Idk if now I submit an EC can I still write the transport strikes as a reason to defer the exam as the strikes are no longer taking place?
Best thing to do is to speak to someone at your uni about what your options are owing to the constant change in circumstances

How should I state as the reason in my EC claim? I need to submit it today as the exam is tomorrow. I’m not sure how ECs work and I’m afraid if it getting rejected so any help will be appreciated:smile:

Hi,

As many of us here on TSR do not know the full extent of your EC nor what your university process is like in terms of what they accept or do not accept it is best to contact your university directly.

You could contact your student union for advice or an academic advisor/tutor so they can signpost you in the right direction.

I know this does not answer your question but I hope you get the answer you are looking for from the university.

Al right thanks. I understand that university is best to help me but what I'm asking here is that how likely is it fora UK university accept my EC (if I submit another one) when they already rejected it.

So my exam was today. I moved to UK only during Christmas break and couldn't find the accommodation as a masters student which seriously impacted my preparation for the exam. I know I should have prioritized my studies. I tried my best but things didn't go as planned.

So last week the uni sent an email saying that exsn will no longer be on 10 January so I became relaxed and fully focused on finding the right accommodation for me. Then 2 days later the university said that a lot of students want to take the exam on 10 January despite strikes so the exam will be on this date. However if a student can't attend they can submit EC for it be in summer.

A day or two after this strikes were called off.

I just came to know yesterday that strikes are called off (my first mistake)
Second,I submitted EC last night before the assessment saying that I can’t make it to exam bcz I came to know strikes suspended only today (my second mistake). I thought that I will add more information to it tomorrow morning but before I could my department already made decision and rejected the EC.

I didn’t go to the exam as I wasn’t well prepared. I know it’s my responsibility to prepare well regardless of circumstances. But a lot of my time got wasted due to not finding a accommodation in London. I am not sure if I can still submit EC for this assessment with a different reason (housing difficulty) despite it already getting rejected. What if they say that before you submit for strikes and now if it’s rejected you are providing different reason and what if they be like housing difficulty is very common and so not an EC.

Hi,

I am very sorry to hear about the circumstances and I really do hope you get an answer soon. Do you have a contact number for the university or a department who can signpost you? Again, here is where your student union might be helpful to contact.

The student reps who do respond on TSR are usually students themselves and we do not want to say how likely something is as we genuinely do not know and do not want to give you an answer that is wrong.

This is unfortunate. Sometimes a new, better mitcirc application will be accepted even when an initial claim was not. Homelessness/living accom issues can count toward MC claims, and so it is worth speaking to the right people and getting some advice on this.

You really need to speak to an academic advisor and/or somebody involved with exam board decisions (usually professorial staff or heads and deputy heads of department). Do this as a matter of priority. The SU might have some guidance on this too.

Revtransport strikes (and for the benefit of others):

What you should do in such circumstances is apply for mitigation citing every possible reason, and then sit the exam anyway. This allows the exam board to apply appropriate mitigation after the fact.

Saying that you didn't sit an exam because you were not well prepared does not bode well even in the light of other circumstances. The onus is on you to know about strikes being on or being cancelled, and it is your responsibility to make appropriate arrangements. It is not the University's job to do either of these things. The strikes being cancelled effectively nullifies the initial MC offer from the university and means that you ought to have sat the exam. The MC team will have taken all this to mean that whilst the circumstances are not ideal, you could have mitigated them yourself. This being the case, they will not be minded to mitigate them for you.

Overall your housing situation might have legs, but it depends on the specifics. You need to push this by speaking to the relevant people ASAP.
