Are firefighters less respectable than doctors?

It has occured to me that people always want to become doctors because the job is honourable, so to speak. Yet firefighters are looked down upon and is only seen as a job which a kid dreams of, then grows to want to become a doctor, like a phase. People, I believe, don't respect firefighters as much as they deserve to be respected. I know that you have to go to medical school for years but becoming a fireman isn't as easy as people assume it is.

What do you guys think? Are firefighters given the praise they deserve or are doctors fair to be given more respect?

I don't think firefighters are looked down upon at all, it is a very noble profession and I for one respect it. I must say, I got a bit ratty with them over the last strike: even Socialists I knew were calling them greedy there. But generally, they're good types.
Who in their right mind "looks down" on a fireman? lol ........
Lol firefighters arent looked down upon at all.

Edit: Except, the salary sucks for what they do.

Firefighting is an excellent job, if I wasn't going down the uni track, that'd probably be what I'd do.

I think Doctors are generally classed as "better" in terms of pay, working conditions etc.

I also think that Fire Fighters and Police Officers should be paid more for the work they do. It is pretty disgraceful in my opinion.

But are Fire Fighters less respectable than Doctors? Certainly not in my book. Credit where credit's due - they do an amazingly tough job for little reward.

It's easy to become a FireFighter than a Doctor and thats where the pay issue comes in.

but everybody sees them as selfish for the money get for what they do

Firefighting is physical bravery. Medicine is intellectual bravery. No-one risks their life by being a doctor, but you don't put your reputation on the line by getting something wrong when firefighting.

So...they're both worthy of respect.

Yes, but how many doctors die at work? Or are injured to the extent that it results in a loss of earnings?

What, so reputation is just as important as life?
The reports of people phoning up for their services and then throwing rocks at them when they arrived at the scene did annoy me somewhat.

is it? id say the mental and physical requirements would make it just as hard
Firefighters get more respect than the Ambulance Service.

I disagree, a lot of doctors have to deal with very difficult morale dilemmas and responsibilities on top of the work they would have to put in to become a doctor. Firefighters of course have to deal with deaths aswell but its much easier to find someone capable of being a firefighter than it is to find a doctor.

Like everyone else I certainly don't think fireman are looked down upon. It is a decent profession, especially for those who may not excel in an academic type environment. The reason doctors get paid more is because there are less people able to undergo the training and have the acadmic skills necessary to be successful in the medical world. Given being a firefighter is a public sector job, the pay is not awful. The starting salary is better than what teachers would get for example.
