hey, I'm a girl studying maths, physics, chemistry and biology at AS level, and I am interested in doing a physics degree. I was wondering if not doing further maths will hold me back a lot?/ should I try and teach myself some of the FM modules to help me and if so which ones? Any advice would be appreciated!

I've applied for physics too! I'm studying maths, physics and biology and also took chemistry and Spanish for AS.

Have applied for Birmingham, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Leeds, had an offer from Glasgow, interview from Leeds, supposedly getting an interview date from Nottingham soon and the others are supposed to start considering after the 15th

Well I was the same only I did IT instead of biology

I was thinking about further maths, and could've done an AS in it this year but decided against it so I can concentrate on my 3 full a levels and do the best I can in them  you could if you want, and maybe see if you can do an AS in it next year ?

I don't think it's held me back as I got all 4 offers with no interviews

Good luck!

All the physics professors at the uni's that I have visited have basically said further maths whilst it is helpful, if you don't do it that won't mean you don't get a place. I did physics, maths, economics and history at as (dropped history) but I have also done AS further maths over two years just to gain a bit of extra knowledge. I have found that FP1 has been particularly helpful so just teaching that to yourself without taking the exam would be great! You can always write about that in your personal statement  I also imagine FP2 would be helpful but that links in with C1-C4 so your would have to wait until the end of your course to learn it.

Good luck!

I'm applying for Natural Sciences, so I suppose it doesn't really count  But I want to do mainly physics, with a bit of biology mixed in there too
ahh no that's great, it's really good to hear what other people have done. Think I will teacher myself as much as possible and write about in my PS because I want to avoid actually doing any further maths exams because of extra stress etc
Thanks for the help!

I'm applying for physics this year and don't do FM. I have two offers, an interview and am still waiting on York and Nottingham. Not doing FM hasn't held me back at all whilst applying, though a friend of mine doing physics at ICL has said he really regrets not having done it as the pace at which it is taught at uni is fast.

So I guess its good to have, but by no means necessary

Hey,

Im a female Astrophysics PhD. I did my undergrad in Physics at Royal Holloway and from being the only girl in Physics at sixth form, at undergrad it was 50/50. And yes Astro attracts women as we are almost 50/50 on my PhD.

More girls in Physics is great. Please ask any questions you have as I have been through it all lol.

I've applied to Royal Holloway for physics went there for an open day loved the uni!

How have you found it? From the course to the social aspects?

Anything in particular that I should know as a heads up (:

I haven't heard back from Edinburgh yet either, makes me feel a bit better that I'm not the only one!

I think Royal Holloway is a great department as it is quite small and everyone gets on really well.

I suppose as a heads up... Physics at any uni has more hours per week than other degrees but at least you are getting your monies worth.

It is a really interesting subject and does require hard work but I found that uni level Physicists are actually a good laugh

Although it is dominated by boys, there are plenty of girls on my course, so I wouldn't worry, in fact, one of the astro lecturers told me that the astro course I'm on is 50:50, or even heavy on girls most years (although my year is only 2 girls in 24 students  ). Plus in terms of socialising, it's quite likely that you'll be closer to your housemates than course mates (or both of course).

Woah, lucky! My course had around 90% men.

Haha think this is what mines gonna be like, although its only a small group, 60-70 students, and then they get split up into around 20, from what I saw when I visited it was mainly guys :')

Didn't know there was a thread for just girl physics applicants! Feeling quite special
I've applied to Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Liverpool and Birmingham, and have offers from Birmingham, St Andrews and Liverpool.

Anyone heard from Durham or Edinburgh?

I'm expecting a rejection from Durham 'cause my AS grades were ****ttt.

Nice idea for a thread! I'm doing joint Maths and Physics (2013 entry) but will almost certainly veer off to the physics side.
I went for Cambridge, UCL, Warwick, Imperial and Nottingham and held offers from the first 3 before I firmed my choices.
Would've liked to apply somewhere like Durham as it's great for physics but I decided it's too far North for me! (nothing against the North, just too long & expensive to travel)
For anyone waiting still, a friend of mine still hasn't got an offer from Durham and in my opinion certainly should if that offers any relief.

I'm fully expecting to be in the minority as a girl wherever I go, especially as for Cambridge I'm technically a maths applicant - a subject even more male orientated I think?
When I went to UCL's open day for physics/maths and physics I was one of 3 girls (of ~35 people)

You have St. Andrews offer  when did you hear? I don't think I'm getting an offer :frown:

Not heard from Durham either. I'm sure if you got a St. Andrew's offer you've a good chance! What were your AS grades if you don't mind me asking?

Haha thanks for the thread compliments  just thought I'd make it as I don't know many girls doing physics, so figure we should stick together no matter where we go

I think physics is maybe more male orientated than maths, but that's just going off my classes and people I know, I know far more girls doing maths, even the mechanics option, than physics

Maybe you could make the argument that most girls who do physics A level, only do it because they want to pursue it at university?
Whereas A level maths is quite popular & useful, but I know very few wanting to pursue it at university. Maybe that's just my school though - I know more female physicists than mathematicians in terms of university choices!
