Who Commutes to uni?

My commute will be just under 2 hours if i decide to commute rather thn getting closer accommodation?

Is it worth it?

How many days a week do you go uni? also for what uni and course?

2 hours each way is a bit :s-smilie:

especially if you were to have 9 o'clock starts, and I certainly would not do it for my course where I go in every day, often with a 9 o'clock being my first lecture/tutorial. Okay, it saves money but really inconvenient if you ever want/need to go home and for getting enough sleep, but at the same time I appreciate that it is hassle to find accommodation, costs a lot etc etc. If I only had to go in 3 times a week then I certainly would consider it.

I will be commuting to uni, 10 minute bus, 20 minute train and then a 5-10 minute walk each way. I already make the same commute for work so it's completely manageable for me :smile:

Will be in Monday through Thursday with an optional drop in session on Fridays

I'm doing Biology at Imperial and I have about an hour and a half commute each day (1 hour train, 10 minute tube, ten minute walk). I lived in halls for my first year, but moved outside London in my second year because I just couldn't afford London prices (even with the travel costs it's a lot cheaper!). Last year I went in most week days in the afternoon and I never missed a lecture or lab last year.

Personally I have never found it a problem because I get up at 6am most days so I'm awake and ready for 9am lectures. There are times I hate it (especially when Southeastern screws up :angry:

), but overall I'm okay with it. I like being able to live in a quiet town because it's a nice break from London and I have a really nice flat for half the price my friends are paying for something smaller in London! It's a bit harder to socialise, but nothing hugely different.

If you aren't a morning person then your commute is going to be awful. If you really want the commute though I would start getting up early now so you're ready for it when you start!

2 hours is too much imo. I have a 15 minute bus journey to uni and even that can cause me to run late sometimes. Seems like something you'll come to regret very quickly, especially on the days where you're in uni till 7pm or later (can happen more often than you think).

About an hour and 1/2 commuting to Queen Mary. It wasn't my choice to commute but I didn't get allocated any accommodation :/

50-55 mins by train.

It would have been perfect if it was 30-35 mins... but judging from this thread I'm lucky my commute is only 50-55 mins.
I just hope the train lines don't screw me over otherwise :rip:

Hh my god don't commute that is so so so long your travelling an 2 hours each way I mean how much will that cost you each week I mean for me it would cost £20 from my nearest main station so that's over £100 a week fi I'm in 5 days with halls as little as £68 week (albeit with a room mate) it would save you so much money to live in halls also it's 4 hours total a day how would you find any time to do assignments and study (the most you can do well on a train is organising and planning) and what if you have lectures finishing at 8 it happens you'll be back at 10 at the earliest and what about long breaks (my longest was 9 hours) sure you can go in the library but 9 hours sustained studying is not fun nor easy so why should you not commute:

Loooong joureny

no time to study or do assignments

possible long days

no social life (because you won't have time)

you'll save money

there is no positive at all

That is way too long a commute. It'll definitely eat up your time and be detrimental to your social life. If you can get a place in halls I'd recommend it. Either that or try and find some cheap private accommodation, or look at house shares in your area - there is bound to be a few rooms for you.

20 minute commute on the bus (if you're lucky; close to an hour in traffic) commute to the hospital I do my Uni training at.

It is a free bus though with our University cards, so I can't really complain.

I commute, maybe anywhere between 45 mins and an hour and 15 mins in the car due to traffic etc...

Does that include walking to the bus stop or train station?

I have commuted for the last two years and the third year I have decided to bite the bullet and get a room in private halls.

I was walking 30 mins to the train station, train ride with 2 stops for an hour (if on time which it never was!) then 15 min walk from the station to uni. If i drove in it would take 30mins t drive if i was going to a late lecture but to get there for 9am i would have to leave at 7:30am at the very latest. The traffic was horrendous.

The cost of travel was crazy because I didn’t live far enough away to use my student rail card (only activates when you pay for a journey that costs £12 or over and the return fair was £8)

The other thing was time. Leaving after a late afternoon lecture puts you in rush hour traffic or rush hour commuting - nightmare.

Another thing about time is that when you commute youre less likely to stay in the library after your lectures finish if you have an awful commute home. Your work will suffer
