I've heard both Kent and Lancaster referred to as collegiate universities. Wikipedia says Roehampton is too.

I don't want to go to Oxford or Cambridge, I know a few people who turned their offers down because of the interview process at Oxford.

oxford, cambridge and durham are the only officially collegiate colleges.
York...lancaster has 'colleges' but you're not taught in them, much akin to york and durham.

What do you mean? That they got an offer from Oxford then turned it down?

Why on earth did they do that? I really don't see the point in apply and going through all that effort if you don't want to go there!

technically even the assertion you are 'taught' in colleges at Oxbridge can be VERY dubious. It depends massively on your options, the particular specialists and where they work etc.

Because after you have your interview there, spend two days there and realise they're stuck up and you feel out of place, it dawns on you that you would hate spending 3 years there.

Some people like it, some don't.

It's nothing strange to turn down an Oxford offer

Why did they apply if they didn't want the place?

Cambridge, Oxford and Durham are the only universities where you apply to a separate college and your application is handled by the college, as well as the faculty.

There are other universities, like York, which have colleges mostly for accommodation and have less of an administrative role.

Why would they turn it down after going through the interview process?

University of London, albeit in a totally different way.
