Human Development Index.... help!

I have been writing an essay using data from the United Nations Development Programme database. However, when searching for a year that wasnt on there, i came across the HDI for south africa for some years which I have the HDI from the UNDP and the figure is different. I am really confused as to how the HDI can be different for the country as a whole for the same year. Does anyone know if the HDI can be different for a country for the same year, or is this just unreliable websites, should I continue using data from the UNDP?
