Counterfeit/fake clothes on ebay

I've bought a few things on ebay and although they came with the tag and everything, I'm pretty sure the tops are counterfeit: low-quality, cheap design.

The obvious way to check an item is genuine is probably to check that the model actually exists in a catalogue.

Has anyone had bad experiences or found a good way to distinguish the genuine stuff?

Reading the rep of the seller is the only way really. They use fake pictures. Report them though, maybe you can get compensation. And leave them bad rep so other people know not to use them.

The sellers who sell counterfeit rarely do get neg. feedback though. Trust me. I was reading an article in the newspaper about how much stuff is counterfeit and I know for sure that one top I bought was counterfeit despite having all these tags of authenticity.

It's hard to tell. The only way I've found to check whether the item is genuine is to go through tons of catalogues online or offline but most buyers simply won't bother.

Perhaps we could make a list here of sellers we know to be bad...That way we don't neg rep them but at least we know who to avoid?

Yes but there are so many sellers out there. Anyone can sell clothes on ebay. Even I've sold genuine stuff on ebay because it didn't fit me/I didn't like it...

There are 100s of people selling counterfeit on ebay and it is quite hard to check that it is actually counterfeit. Like have a look at the belts: loads of Gucci counterfeits but these sellers don't get neg. feedback. I got a CK belt a while ago. When I received it, sure it looked nice but I question the authenticity: it's not even leather  and looks a bit cheap if you look close up and there's something about the logo that doesn't look 100% right. But as I can't be 100% sure...

Take the item into the shop concerned and check it against the item in the shop.

I bought Levis' twisted jeans once off ebay, back in the day, they turned out to be fake (with labels and everything). I've never gone back to ebay since.

how did you work out they were fake?

They were nothing like the ones in the shop, they didn't have an authentic Levis tag, and the red tab was missing.

usually the price is a giveaway on if something is fake on ebay.

For "luxury" items, I guess the price can indicate whether it's counterfeit but they could just be out of the warehouse... that's why it's always so difficult to tell. You don't even know if the stuff you're getting comes from the places clothes you would buy on the high street come. They might come from a counterfeit warehouse that specialises in that :frown:

I've bought stuff with tags. It means very little that they have tags. Maybe you were lucky. People don't bother giving neg. feedback because they can't tell if it's counterfeit. Since what you see is that you get...

95% of 'designer' goods are fake. Don't be fooled (especially with those who have 1000+ positive feedback).

2nd hand goods and one off items are far more likely to be genuine. Those who seem to have 15 boxes of CK boxers are very likely to be fake. This is because CK don't distribute their items to resellers on ebay to be sold at dirt cheap prices (they should be pretty strict on this). Another obvious way to tell is the quality of the item e.g poor stitching is often found in counterfeit items.
