I started there a couple months after turning 20 and I turned down offers from Nottingham and Loughborough to stay there for the remainder of my degree (I'm now 21).

Trust me, there are more young people there than you'd think. Regardless of our respective ages my classmates and I still socialise together.

Personally I am looking forward to it!

Hello,

I applied for the MSc in International Management at Birkberk University and got an unconditional offer.

Before taking any decision, I’d like to know what you think of this of this university and, specifically, of this MSc? Do this course has good reputation and recognition?

Thanks!
Unconditional offer to study accounting and economics. I previously studied maths and science with hopes off going to do biomed, which I did for one year I hated it. So I decided to take time off regenerate and do something I love. Am only 20 but when I went to the open day I found do many young people. I am looking forward to starting in October 😆
Hey everyone, I've applied and got an offer for Msc Marketing that I've already met. Wondering if there was anyone else out there on the same course starting October.
- I also have an offer from London School of Business and Finance and would like to inquire as to what people think about it? BBK or LSBF? Thanks guys

Having been a student at Birkbeck for an MSc in Microbiology, I have to say the facilities of the university are very good. The site is next door to other universities of Uni of London, and the feeling of being at a cosmopolitan and high quality institution are obvious. The university is considered ''good'' in terms of reputation and quality, as opposed to the Russell Group universities which are generally considered from ''very good'' to ''world class''. I went to Nottingham for my BSc several years ago, and although Birkbeck isn't on that level it still compares reasonably well to other heavyweights in the Russell Group.

On the downside, there is very little atmosphere or spirit at Birkbeck, and it can be hard to make lots of friends with other students, most of whom are mature students and have families or fulltime jobs to juggle. If you are looking to have lots of fun and party every week with course mates, then this university is definately not for you. If you just want a good flexible education and don't care about having an active social life at the university, then Birkbeck is a great option.

BBK has a much better reputation overall, but at LSBF you would probably enjoy it more and make more friends. I would go with BBK.
Has anyone else here enrolled?

I got my info and managed to enrol online today!

I also sent off for my ID Card.

BBK has a high drop out rate (about 40% in just the first term). As I said, if you can handle the strange feeling of no atmosphere and community at BBK, then you will be one of the 60% of students who stay on. The initial excitement of starting at BBK will wear off within a couple of weeks, and after a couple of months you will know if you want to continue.

LSBF isn't a real University is it? I thought it was just a place for International students to go just to enable them to get a UK visa and live and work.

Last I heard LSBF was accredited by the University of Wales. It is a no frills version of the much more prestigious and world renowned London Business School (LBS). As a benchmark of quality, LSBF is like going to a decent former polytechnic, whereas LBS is on a par wih LSE. BBK is a 1994 Group university, the next rung down from the elite Russell Group, so around a top 30 university.

It has absolutely nothing to do with LBS, which is as you say a great Uni. I think I read recently that the government had issues with the LSBF students, as many were not going to school, and we're just using it for visas.

Not everyone will be aware of the fact that LBS is a google times better than LSBF. But LSBF has it's own mission and target market, to provide decent affordable education to less able students who aren't going to be able to afford better institutions or have the grades to meet their entry requirements.

Is there a reason why you are posting this on a thread about Birkbeck? LSBF has nothing to do with Birkbeck or the University of London.

If you read the thread, you will see I am replying to a comment about LSBF in this thread.

sorry, I saw this now, I missed that there was a question about BBK/LSBF.
I suddenly got a flurry of reps from a post in this thread years ago, I'd forgotten all about this thread haha. Aww, it's so cute to see everyone so bright eyed and bushy tailed about starting BBK  I remember when I had that feeling so many years ago...

A bit unrelated to my point about enrolments but nevertheless a comment to be addressed!

I don't think Birkbeck has a lack of atmosphere and community. Very unfair statement to make. I have a lot of friends who study there and are part of the student union and they very much say the opposite. From my visits there I've not seen a lack of atmosphere...

Given the fact that Birkbeck is in Bloomsbury and right next door to the likes of UCL, SOAS and ULU... it's got three times more the atmosphere than it already has!

As for drop out rates... maybe because it has such a diverse range of students, focuses on evening study for a few courses which is different and not everybody can adjust to that...for a variety of reasons.
