Ill see if i can find some alternative options.
There is the above option (see post #1585) at £418 from the Dell Outlet (kinda sceptical about that one tho!)
Add a monitor from overclockers £210 inc delivery.
Its a possibility anyway. £618.

I certainly don't insist on a Dell either, theyve just been the cheapest ive found so far.
cheap does not always mean good! but if it meets your needs then go for it! i heard that Dell take ages for delivery, my cousin had to wait quite a while so bear that in mind. i still think that more than £400 is phenomenal

Personally I wouldnt touch dell...infact I wouldnt touch any prebuilt machines were I to need a new computer, but if I did Dell would be my very very very last port of call.
Hey, well im hopin someone will be able to help me...
my parents are after a new pc, there old one has just about given up the ghost now...
Basically they need little more than a glorified word processor.lol.
use it for lots of internet browsing/email/word procesing/pics etc. and the odd game of solitaire.lol, no hardcore gaming.

originally they was after a laptop, but now are thinkin abut getting a desktop again... im out of the pc buying scene atm, so dnt have much of an idea as to what is good etc...

They dont mind spending about £400 on it all in.(give or take abit) (ya can get basic comps for tht price in pcworld etc, but im reluctant to go there first without looking at all options.lol)
need base unit and a screen, want a flat screen tft etc, not to bothered about keyboard atc, can soon buy them seperate... unless anyone knows of a good laptop.
dont want something thats amazing coz dont wanna spend the money for the use it will get, but similarly dont wnt to get something tht will be dead in a year, need something that will cope for a few years to go, this comp atm is an old amd runnin windows ME, bout 5 - 6 years old we think....lol - not bothered about vista, xp will be fine.

also if ther will be a major saving buy building it myself then if you have any suggestions please fire away, jst with uni and time limitations its not my first choice....

hope someone can help us.. many thanks in advance

you want a computer with a monitor and OS for £400? you might struggle unless you go prebuilt, i'm sorry to say.

but i'll see what i can find for you in the world of custom building.

Windows XP OEM £58.74

monitor:
Acer 17" AL1706 8ms LCD TFT £104.98

i'll get onto the rest now. I'm gonna go ahead and assume this computing isn't a gaming PC, and therefore onboard graphics will suffice? as this seriously reduces the cost.

Asus M2NPV-MX £51.60

phew.

total £395.96 excluding delivery.

*breathes sigh of relief.*
Yea as i say, pc world etc can do them for this price... im not bothered bout pre built etc, its just a matter of knowing which one to get. and as i say its not for me, just my parents, so they really dont need anything brilliant. just soemthing that isnt going to be completely obselite by easter! lol

i mean iv looked arounf and and ya can get something like this
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116050/rb/24621188149
or this
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119749/rb/24621188149
or this
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116052/rb/24621188149
add in a cheap monitor
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/123036/rb/24621291614

and its well under £400

but like which base unit to get... with only a little difference in price, but a completely diff spec which works out the best for the money like.
and with the monitor, that is just the cheapest one, obv id choose something a bit better like....
i mean something at a retail store may prove cheaper?? i doubt it like. but im open to any suggestions!

any suggestions? if so, thanks. rep as always to all helpers!
Cheers!
well, i've edited my post with a build i've made, it's just under £400.

although, wow, that last one you posted is really good. i think you should go with that, but using the monitor i posted, it has better spec.
cheers mate! so if you had to choose between building it yourself, or just buying one of those is suggested, which would you go for then??

Cheers again, rep on its way!

Can anyone suggest any better base units that are available and the age old question amd or intel... lol

Robcampo
well, this is the answer: if you have the money to buy a core 2 duo, intel will absolutely smash AMD for price/performance, however, in the lower price markets, AMD still win, which is why i picked an AM2 build for you. if you had more money, say £600-£700, it'd be a C2D all the way.

I will always build it myself, but then i'm always looking for performance - i save up and buy performance parts - i'm looking at buying 2 GB of RAM which costs £189, but as my monitor broke and i had to buy a new one... :frown:

in terms of a small budget, non-gaming PC, I'd say a prebuilt was a good option.

I've specced cheap systems for £300 inc monitor, speakers etc. You dont need an Athlon 64 for day-to-day tasks. A £24 Sempron 2600 is just fine (and shares the same architecture anyway, just slightly lower clock and less cache).

I'm thinking about buying this laptop:

Any words on it all would be appreciated. I can get it for under £800 with employee discount at the moment.

I want to start building my first PC but I'm stuck at the first hurdle, selecting the case:confused: .

I don't know whether I should opt for a nice expensive one like this:
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=11877&GroupID=1397

Or opt for a cheaper one around about £50 or less.

Could someone recommend some good cases?
Reply 1595
That one's a bit ugly and overpriced. You need one that looks like a fridge. :p:
