Mechanical Engineering Degree - Any recommended books for extra reading ?

I'm thinking about studying mechanical engineering (probably MEng) and was wondering whether you guys recommend any books that may help improve my Personal Statement or any books that will help me adjust from A2 to degree level engineering ?

Professional Engineering magazine if you can.
An engineering magazine so you can talk about current projects in the engineering world if asked, it also shows somewhat an interest in the subject. Don't hang large amounts of your personal statement on it though.
