Engineering career options

Hi, I am currently applying to 5 different UK universities to study engineering/MechEng: Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Bristol and Bath.
I really enjoy learning new things and am convinced that this is the subject for me. However, I still wonder if engineering is a good degree to get today in the UK. Wondering if anyone has any insight to help me?

For reference, I would love to work in a science/tech-driven large company, not necessarily as an engineer. I would like to be earning a fair amount of money throughout my career, and would love options outside of science/tech if I decide that I do not want to do that (eg management consulting). How easy is it to be hired as an engineering graduate in a different field, and will my degree really be valued in the UK? What are my chances vs an Economics graduate for example? What do you think about my choice of uni? Thanks

Engineering is an amazing degree. Cambridge is Engineering Maths & Physics with modules in Mech engineering. Imperial, UCL, Bristol, and Bath are Mechanical Engineering. Most of the people I know who did Engineering ended up going into Finance, although some used their engineering to go into management consulting. Some went into the RAF and secured a bursary to do this. Engineering give you one of the widest range of career options on any degree offered.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Anyone else have any opinions on this?

Also, wondering if you think I should apply directly for MEng courses or BEng courses. I'm thinking MEng because it's only 1 extra year for a master's. What do you think?

I'd recommend evaluating Meng vs Beng and then decide what you want to do? Note that you can move to Meng after first year. Which college are you going for at Cambridge? I know that it might seem early, but you should start applying for your first year internships now - engineering firms and management consultancies. A family friend read Engineering at Cambridge, then converted to Law specialising in Intellectual Property Law, as it is a great career for engineering graduates. Good luck!!

Sounds good, I’ll look into it! I loved Jesus College after visiting at Open Day. Thank you
