Do the rooms that aren’t en-suite have a basin in them?

I think most rooms do depending on halls (my room has a basin)

Every hall's events are put on by that hall's committee, using money that comes directly from the fees paid by the students who live in that residence. The vast majority of events are not open to the public because they are paid for by and meant for the people who live there. That said, if you have a friend in JBH who will swipe you in and bring you to the movie night, I doubt anyone would kick you out.
Hi ,
I was wondering since you have your exams before Christmas, do you have to study during the holidays? I'd love to be able to go home for Christmas and not have to worry about working.
Thanks!

no studying during holidays  up until about 5 years ago lectures would finish by mid December and you'd then have the whole Christmas holidays to revise for exams in January.

but now the first semester is more pressured with all the exams and everything squeezed in by lateish December, so you dont have to worry about exams at all over the Chrismas hols
Hi,I'll be attending St Andrews as a postgrad for the 2019-20 year. Do you have any insight to life on campus as a postgrad student? Are most events and societies open to both undergrad and postgrad students? Thanks!
How often do students travel to Dundee and is it normal for them to go clubbing in Dundee?

Depending on the group, some go every week, some less often.
Sorry if it's been asked before, but do direct entry (second year) students still participate in the traditions? I.e. Raisin weekend and the like.

Also, how are the sports clubs? I see there's a lot on offer. What's the pricing like? How many can you take on? Etc.

You can definitely participate in Raisin if you want to, people are pretty free with the rules so I doubt you'd have trouble finding someone to adopt you. Some students are adopted by people who are younger than they are, depending on circumstances.

Can't vouch at all for the sports clubs, I'm not in any lol. But I do believe that you have to pay for a gym membership to be in a sports club, which is £70 for the year and doesn't actually include regular access to the fitness machines. If you want to use the gym, you have to pay the regular membership fee which is £150 for the year. Then the fees for joining the societies themselves vary from one of the next.

I was direct entry physics and participated just like anyone else. If anything, direct entry helps you socialise more across year groups, not that it's difficult otherwise. Being direct entry actually meant I could justify adopting people in my 2nd (and 3rd) years here, so you could say I participated more than most.

I'm in quite a few societies so only have time for one sport, but you could definitely join multiple. The ones I've tried out have been really welcoming. If the pricing isn't on the website (https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/sport/sport/) you could try messaging the specific sports team's page on Facebook. It'll usually be seen by a student who'll be more than happy to help.

Which phone company has best coverage in the area?

I've had SIM cards on networks that used O2, EE, and Three, and all of them were fine. In the town centre there's so much eduroam (university wifi) coverage, that you often won't need to use your mobile data.

If you think you might go travelling around Scotland while you're here, I'd probably suggest something that uses EE.

I'm on O2 network (using Giffgaff, which is cheaper than doing it directly). I find that I get better reception around University Hall/North Haugh than I did with EE, but otherwise never really had a problem with either.

Is it difficult to find accommodation for the second year? Is it very competitive and hard to find somewhere available?
Hello, current 3rd year. It depends what you mean. It's very easy to get student accommodation for each returning year in student halls. They will always find something for you since returning students apply and get a place before fresher students.

In terms of getting a flat, or any other private accomodation, it's more tricky. There is always something available, (I know returning students that got flats in September) but pricing can be pretty expensive or the flat is not located well.
