A-level Politics help

In September I start my politics A-level, having never studied the subject I want to read some useful books that will give me a heads up.
If anyone can recommended any books they found useful in getting started please reply.

It all depends on what politics course you are doing really, but I just read all the BBC's articles to help me. Plus I had my brother who already had an A in the subject - that helped.

But just read the news and get involved in debates on TSR!

let's start with the easy stuff: for socialism read the Communist Manifesto, for conservatism read Edmund Burke's 'Reflections on the revolution in France' and for liberalism read Mill's 'On liberty'. That should give you a solid grounding in the great 19th century ideologies. for other issues such as current affairs or whatever, read anything you see fit.
Developments in British Politics is useful title. There's a new edition out in a couple of weeks: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Developments-British-Politics-Richard-Heffernan/dp/0230221742/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1H0K2NXEFLJZ&colid=1GNIC85K47V7W

There's also a number of A-level Politics websites out there.

Just make sure you keep up to date with current affairs - reading newspapers, watching the news, listening to the radio etc.

This is a pretty useful textbook as it includes up to date stuff about the 2010 General Election and helped me when writing essays: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AS-UK-Government-Politics-Textbook/dp/0340986638

Always remember you can't know about politics simply by reading out of a textbook - it's always changing!
Good luck anyway!
