Good luck

I did one week work experience in summer at a medium size solicitor firm, however, they were not very busy at that time, so there wasn't much to do. I went to family court a few times and sat in front of the judge, alongside one of the solicitors, however, mainly it was all paperwork and going around, asking if anyone needed anything to be done.
I have a two day mini pupillage coming up at barristers chambers in March, so looking forward to that a little more, since I will get to go to court and see more things then I did sitting in the office

Hey, I'm doing a week long placement in a small solicitor's office, and was wondering if anyone had done a similar placement before, and what it involved? Like I say, it's a small, local, office, and they specialise mainly in criminal work, and was just wondering what people think I'll be doing? i.e. will I spend the week photocopying, or am I likely to have the opportunity to get more involved than this?

I've spent 3 weeks doing work experience at a solicitor's office and I really enjoyed it - just make it clear from the beginning that you're interested in law (i'm assuming you are? ) and they will most likely help you to try and get the experience you want. For example, when I arrived they asked me what I would like to do so I said i'd love to see the criminal law side (because most of the work they do is with probate, land etc) and I got the opportunity to go to the courts a few times  just see how it goes and if it looks like you are only doing photocopying and organising things just make the most out of that by reading the things you're copying - something one of the partners reccommended to me - and maybe grab a few law magazines and things as they're often thrown out  hope that helps!

Looking at this thread's history it seems to come back every three years, like some kind of comet.

If you want work experience and you don't know any solicitors/anyone that knows any solicitors then either write to or phone all the local solicitors and ask if you can come in. It's a good thing to have for Uni apps so good luck.
hi would you be able to tell me what firm you went to please as i am trying to apply for a place it would be alot of help thanks

Yep it would be pretty boring and hardly means anything on your cv. But then again, now i've secured a 10 month contract at a corporate law firm for my gap year, so you have to start somewhere!

Eh? I don't know where you get this idea from - it is really important to get this kind of thing on your CV. Also, if you do work ex in a law firm and you think it's boring, then think on - really. Is it for you?

Anyone reading this comment 'it hardly means anything on your CV' ignore it. Getting any legal placement actually shows drive, initiative and will show experience in law firms. This is EXACTLY what you need on your CV if you want to show recruiters you are interested in law. Sorry to be so harsh, person who wrote this, but there are a lot of newbies reading this! Plus, high street law and corporate law firms are different things. Perhaps this poster means that experience at a high street law firm is not relevant to bagging jobs at corporate law firms - ? Who knows. I will qualify that to take this comment with a large pinch of salt
I'm such a dork - this is a zombie thread!! I will respond usefully to the person who has dug it up then

Hello - you have dug up a very old thread!

It doesn't really matter what firm it was for you as you are probably not in the same area. Are you just trying to get a work experience placement at a local law firm? It would be better in any case for the OP not to name the firm involved.

So, what you need to do is write a good CV and a great, one page cover letter and start sending it out to all the law firms and chambers (possibly local courts too and judges) in your area, as far as you can get travel-wise.

You should do some research on the firm and talk about why you are interested in law and what you would hope to get out of the work experience. Be honest and passionate (yet professional) - send it out to lots of places and expect a lot of rejection (not personal) and you might get a bite this way -

you can also send it out and follow it up with a phone call - in fact, what I would do is phone the law firms, explain to them you would like to send this letter to the person who answers the phone (this will likely be the secy or receptionist) and ask their advice as to who is best to approach. Then address your letter to that person - make sure you spell their name correctly and also the name of the firm correctly - lots dont. Make sure you check your letter before you send it and try and get your letter and CV looked over by someone.

you could also start by asking for a day or two's shadowing experience also, so the commitment from the law firm is minimal.

the university of kent has a helpful careers page which has template letters you could try.

Good luck. Persevere. And ask everyone you know if they can think of anyone who might be able to help you.

I would def have a go at the courts near you and ask if you can shadow a judge or a clerk for a day or two - v informative if you can get it and judges like to help students I think
Where did you go for this? Anywhere in London?
I'm looking to do a weeks work experience and am struggling to find a placement!
Help?
