AQA C4 Trig identities. June '10 Q5 b) i)

Help needed with the following (the mark scheme is useless):

Express 3cos2x + 2sin2x in the form Rcos(2x-a), where R>0 and 0<a<90, giving your answer to the nearest 0.1.

R should equal sqrt13 and a should be 33.7. Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you made any progress? Post your working.

If you don't know where to start, expand Rcos(2x-a) and then compare this with 3cos2x + 2sin2x.

Thanks notnek. I was looking to expand the LHS instead of the RHS, which ultimately led to a very logn and unnecessary equation.
