as for question 03 i put -
Intro:weighed up the inclusivist/exclusivist definitions of religion and talked about in terms of exclusivist (belief in a supernatural God, one would suggest it is declining) however the inclusivist (in terms of worshipping celebrities etc would suggest it is increasing) i then criticised the inclusivist definition and said that some would argue this supports secularization as they no longer place emphasis on traditional religion
first paragraph: first off i spoke about measuring religiosity and how this is difficult due to statistics and then i spoke about the rationalisation of the world and how science is now providing a more rational view of the world predicting religion wrong for instance in terms of the 'big bang' science has proved evolution did take place.
Second paragraph: i spoke about ways in which religion is declining in significance, churches closing down, attendance decreasing (one has to be careful when using statistics), younger generation placing more emphasis on leisure activities. socialisation is also not reinforcing children. i also spoke about the archbishop of cantenbury who said 'the church is like an old women muttering away to herself' therefore supporting that the church is boring and talks about issues that are bizarre to the young. i also suggested western countries are less religious due to industrialisation.
Third paragraph: i spoke about ethnic minorities and the reason they place emphasis on religion, however criticised this with how they may not actual be really religious it could be as a cultural defence against racism or the fact that church provides a social mechanism for many members. i also spoke the older generation being more religious, however criticised this with them turning to religion for social mechanisms due to spouse dieing and leaving paid employment, not because they place a huge emphasis on religion.
Fourth paragraph: i spoke about fundamentalism, both in the USA and Islamic countries. i said however that the USA population disregards religion and places emphasis on the american life, suggesting that these fundamentalists are a minority. i backed this up with right wing politicians who have to down play their religion in order to be elected, i also spoke about Tony Blair and said that when he was prime minister he said he didnt want to portray himself as a catholic because he didnt want to be regarded as a 'nutter' therefore supporting religion is declining in importance. I also spoke about people turning to fundamentalism due to globalisation, but this is also a minority
Fifth paragraph: i briefly spoke about NAM and said how these are growing and it could be that this shows that traditional religion is in decline, however in times of crisis people turn to the church which suggests it plays a role when people need it but most of the time it is back seated. i cant remember the rest to be honest but i think i spoke about ways in which it is important and stuffs.
conclusion: summed up essay, said religion was not as important as science no longer especially in the west and it can be suggested that once the east such as asia and africa begin to industrialise they will no longer place as much emphasis on religion, however religion will always be around and not dissapear therefore it does play a vital function in the world, it just isnt as important as it used to be.
TA DAAAAAAH. (sorry about lack of caps and spelling, my hand really aches ahah)
