What is the difference between existentialism and nihilism?

I've always seen myself as an existentialist but after having a discussion with my friend, who happens to be a philosopher, he said that i'm more of an nihilist than an existentialist. I know little about nihilism, so I was wondering what is the difference between the two and what are the similarities?

In a nutshell:

Existentialism: What is meaning?
Nihilism: There is no meaning.

Nihilism can be a branch of existentialism.
In both, there is no inherent meaning in life. Nihilism takes this to mean there is no meaning at all, whereas the existentialist can take this to mean that we are free to create meaning in whatever way. I've always seen existentialism as a lot more positive than nihilism.
