International relations people

Hey guys,

So for those of you who have either applied and are looking towards studying international relations at uni, and people who are already at university studying this course, what do you want to do with the degree? What plans etc.. do you have? I don't really have one! I just find it crazy interesting

OH and if you applied this year, where did you apply?

Hello! No definite plans yet - would perhaps like to do something with the Foreign Office, or journalism maybe? In the same position as yourself really! I'm doing it more for the education itself rather than career opportunities to be honest!
I applied to Warwick, Edinburgh, St Andrews, and Lancaster  you?

Leicester, Swansea, Demonfort, Conventry and Lincoln! Only heard back with three offers from Swansea, Demonfort and Lincoln. Praying I'll get into Leicester! I'm so excited to start this degree programme! To learn all that stuff, and to apply it to a rage of job fields! So happy that I feel no regret with this degree choice:rolleyes: You got any offers?

im a 2nd year International Relations student at UEA. I too chose the degree out of interest rather than with a particular career plan in mind. I'm thinking now that I like the idea of working for a think tank or such like

Hi! I applied for international relations and history and have offers from LSE, SOAS, royal holloway, Exeter and Sussex. Not so sure about future plans but maybe some international NGO work or possibly think-tank type of thing; I'm exactly like you, just interested in the subject!

Hi

I'm an International Relations and Politics graduate (1st class). It's a great subject if you're interested!

Most of my friends have ended up doing paid charity/NGO work. Some are doing PhDs and others are parliamentary case workers.

There are a few of us following 'traditional careers'. Some are teachers, management consultants and journalists. I myself am training to be a solicitor.

You can do pretty much anything after if tbh.

I studied politics for by undergrad, and then IR for my masters. I worked in Parliament for a while, and I'm now in public affairs. The people who I studied with on both courses are doing a huge range of courses. People work for the civil service, NGOs, think tanks, law firms. I have friends who set up their own business, and friends who do completely different things. So you can do whatever you want really!

Well assuming all goes well I plan to complete my Undergraduate(IR), complete a Masters (Human Geography, International Development?) and then possibly a PhD.

In terms of a career, I don't have a specific goal. I want to travel and I want to do something that actually matters and something I actually enjoy, so chances are it'l be with a large NGO or the U.N. However I am also interested in potential work with the FO, although not as a life-long career.

As others have said, a degree in IR has a ton of uses and is relevant in a number of fields not just politics.

Probably become a lobbyist or some NGO or something in the government.
I'm final year IR in Politics. I specialised in IR in second year and have now opted to specialise in political sociology for my final year in prep for and masters in political communications (hopefully)career in market research/e-democracy. Basically, I found out IR really wasn't for me :P (besides the Feminist bits!)
Hi Guys . I have got firm offers to study IR from Birmingham , Loughborough and Nottingham.

I have discounted Loughborough and now am toying with Birmingham vs Nottingham.

I need to find out for my subject which is the betteer place to study. I need to consider reputation of departments and more. Please help

Heeey,

Oh, that's good that you've figured out it wasn't for you! But why do you think it wasn't for you? I'm quite excited to start it! Hopefully I'll find what interests me and know what does not at all interest me. What University did you study in by the way?

Yeah, I need to consider the same things. I'm deciding whether to firm Leicester or Swansea University. I visited Swansea Uni and fell in love with the whole place : ) But Leicester is much highly ranked in comparison to Swansea. I'm gonna visit Leicester next month though so I shall know... But right now, I think I'm gonna firm Leicester. I know I'm contradicting myself here, but I know I'll feel like a fool if I firmed Swansea over Leicester and I'm feeling risky! And hmm, out of your two, I prefer Birmingham! Have loads of friends there, but then again, how can I speak; I've never been Nottingham.

Currently I'm Sheffield

It's quite difficult to explain really. Essentially, I found myself rejecting the importance of 'state security' and that the dominance of Realism troubled me, particularly after learning the 'Gendered' theories. I found myself frustrated when looking at what was going on in Syria, and understanding why nobody was going to intervene and why it was extremely likely it was going to stay that way... I mean, it's sort of fascinating but cruel and heartless at the same time.

Looking back at my personal statement and my interests then, I think I was always more interested in political sociology, I just didn't quite realise it at the time. So I wouldn't worry about it, most people love IR, I'm definitely the exception :P
