East Anglia or Reading

I have offers from East Anglia and Reading to study Maths in September. I get the impression that Reading is better for Maths but East Anglia is better overall, though I do not think there is much between them. Does anyone else think this? If so, should I choose the better course or the better reputation? Which one would you choose?

I'm completely biased seeing as I go to UEA, but I'd definitely make that your choice. It's a lovely university and all my friends doing maths all speak very highly of the course. Having said that, you might want to spend some time checking through the modules and degree programmes on offer at both and see which one best suits your interests - it's better to do a degree better suited to you rather than do a less appropriate programme at a university with a stronger reputation.

It's nice to hear you're having a good time at UEA. In terms of what the courses offer, they're neck and neck for me. Of course I need to take other factors into consideration too.

Hi Nicolamuse,

You've had some fantastic advice already in that you should make your decision based on which university is right for you. Have you had a chance to visit both universities? If not we run campus tour afternoons most Fridays and can arrange for you to meet with Maths academics so you can talk through which modules you will study and exactly what it's like to study Maths at UEA.

In terms of the benefits that studying Maths at UEA can offer, we have great links with local businesses which means you have the opportunity to carry out an internship or work with businesses within modules, great for developing skills needed in the workplace when you graduate.

The School of Mathematics hosts Alumnus Evenings which are a great opportunity for current students to meet former UEA Maths students and to find out how their degree has helped them in their chosen careers or further education

There is a student-led Maths Society which you can join to socialise with other Maths students and attend organised events and trips.

The department also awards four prizes of £100 each year to students who perform exceptionally well.

Finally, 100% of students were satisfied overall with the Maths course at UEA. This can be seen on the UniStats website.

Also, it depends which campus and city you prefer, so maybe have another look at what each one offers, if you haven't visited Norwich I would be happy to give you more information on what it offers as a City and answer any questions for you.

I hope this helps,

Hannah

Thank you for the reply, Hannah. I am coming to a visit day in a couple of weeks so I'm sure this will aid me in making my final decision. Could you tell me more about Norwich and what it offers?

That's great hopefully you will find out everything you need to know on the visit day then.

In terms of Norwich, it's a very vibrant city with lots to get involved with, and it's the perfect size for most being not too big but by no means small. Depending on what your interests are, I have listed some of the things it can offer:

Shops: Norwich has two shopping malls- Castle Mall and Chapelfield Mall, two main high streets, the Norwich Lanes and the royal arcade which are home to independent shops and boutiques, along with retail parks anda huge market place.

Nightlife: Norwich is home to various nightclubs and bars depending on your music tastes, there is The Waterfront which is an alternative venue also host to many popular bands, The LCR which is UEA's student union venue, also a popular nightclub choice but has seen bands like Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Norwich also has nightclubs like Lola Lo, Tau, Mercy, Wonderland, Fluke, Mojo's and Essence, all which cater for different tastes.

Arts and Culture: You have the choice of four cinemas, three theatres, you can visit Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle, the historic area of Elm Hill, and various other museums, art galleries and attractions.

Norwich is also home to two universities, UEA and Norwich University of the Arts so the student population and culture is really apparent and it gives Norwich a multicultural edge.

The county of Norfolk boasts magnificent countryside including the Norfolk broads where you can hire a boat with friends, the Norfolk Coastline which features seaside towns and more peaceful beaches.

I hope this gives you a bit of an insight, but it might be a good idea to visit the city centre when you come to your visit day. The number 25 bus goes straight from campus, through the city and on to the station which makes it convenient for getting around.

Feel free to ask me anything else more specific!

Select the two universities to compare.

They seem very close in terms of what the course offers.
