Chemistry D block complexes help

I'm just trying to get my head complex formations, in particular, coordination numbers.
My text book says that the coordination number is the number of bonds that a ligand forms with a central metal atom/ ion. However, if you have a polydentate ligand, does this increase the coordination number? Help would be appreciated

No, each ligand just occupies more sites. Try comparing these examples, (look them up!!!)

[Cr(H2O)6]+3
[Cr(en)3]+3
[Fe(EDTA)]-2
