Self confidence holding me back from Uni - Advice??

Hi all,

just wanted to post this because i've been thinking about Uni a lot & i'm starting to feel really nervous about it.
I know that i want to go to Uni and I want to move away, i've always wanted to, but i've always been a shy person & my self-confidence holds me back a lot, so i'm wondering whether this will hold me back? Like, will i become more independent & self confident whilst living away at Uni?
It'd really help if people could share experiences or give me any advice on this issue because it's really starting to worry me & i'm starting to loose sleep over it...

thanks

Hello  I'm pretty much like you, always been very introverted and shy but always wanted to go to university. I get very nervous in new situations and round people. I too am hoping university will help me overcome this.
I guess I'll find out this September

Yeah, i'm hoping that by throwing myself in the deep end (moving away and forced to live with new people) that my self-confidence will grow and i'll adapt to it and just generally become more mature & comfortable with these things
just get really anxious over the idea of everything i'm going to have to do & meeting new people, people who i have no idea will react to me!:colondollar:

It's reassuring to know that others feel the same as myself though

what are you applying to do? & what uni?

As you will be uprooting and facing unfamiliar situations it's totally natural to feel nervous.

In order to counter that how about changing the way you think about this challenge? You can look at this as a chance to reinvent yourself, that means stepping out of your comfort zone, feeling the fear but doing it anyway. Everyone else will be in the same boat.

In other words, to think of this as an exciting adventure, in which you have the opportunity to develop yourself, and become more like the person you want to be, is a healthier way of dealing with the anxiety.

Hii
I can be quite shy and starting university last year made me very nervous! I luckily had a friend who did the same course, but even without her I have still made many friends and they have helped with my confidence LOADS! At the beginning I wouldn't go out or anything but soon made good friends. You will be ok and will find it easy to make friends on your course and in halls etc. It will boost your confidence loads, I can't wait to start second year

When I arrived at uni I told myself that I have to just meet and say hello to my new flatmates on arrival regardless of how much I was out my comfort zone. Once you've done it, you realise that it's not that bad, and you'll probably meet great new friends. The majority of people in your flat will be in the same boat as you, not knowing anybody and wanting to make friends.

I'd suggest to keep your door open when you arrive so your flatmates will know that you want to socialise.

Just enjoy it
I've met loads of people like you at uni who've ended up making friends. In fact one of my best friends is really shy and self-conscious and found it hard to make friends. Now, he's one of the most popular guys I know. People just know him and like him because he's such a nice guy.

Anyway, everyone in freshers is nervous and will want to make friends just go say hi to the people in your accommodation and don't be afraid to talk to people. It's perfectly normal to go up to people and talk to them in freshers cause everyone just wants to meet people. So don't be afraid to say hello!

Hi,

Don't be nervous. I have struggled with confidence and anxiety but going to uni makes you to independent and you realise that people don't perceive those aspects of you.

LJMU is a great uni and the staff are really supportive on the Biomedical Science course. Try to talk to as many different people as possible, even if you have to force yourself because everyone's in the same boat.

It's a learning curve but it's rewarding to look back and see how far you've come, you're capable of more than you think.

Do it! I went, best thing I ever did. If you're shy that's even more of a reason to go in my opinion, it gets you out your comfort zone and really helps with confidence
OP how did your first year go?
