Weight.

The engine block is the heaviest part of an engine.

Aluminium is half the weight of iron. This transpires directly to increased fuel efficiency, better power to weight ratio and lower running costs.

Manufacturing costs are also not simply the cost of raw materials. Transportation of heavy items is a major cost, aluminium is again cheaper in this respect.
