The Student Room Group

Moving off the rock to the big, wide world!

Hi! I'm Lauren and next Saturday I will be moving to Reading to start university!

I come from a little island where everyone knows everyone so it will be pretty weird!

At the moment I'm busy trying to decide what to take with me and how it will all fit in the car! It's pretty difficult because I want to take almost everything I own!

Tonight I ordered a bunch of cooking supplies (tongs/baking trays/sieve etc), bedroom and bathroom furniture (mirrors/clothes horse/laundry bag etc) online so that it will be delivered to the store and when I arrive in reading I'll be able to go to the supermarket and pick it all up! I didn't realise how much it would all cost and that's with lots of my family buying uni stuff as birthday presents! I think I'm may have to start looking for work!! :P

I'm really looking forward to starting university and just hoping I won't suffer with freshers flu too badly! I have a horrible cold at the moment which has motivated me to make a first aid kit to take with me so that I have anything I might need. Still need to buy some more for it but I'll post a list of the contents when it's finished in case anyone else is looking for what to put in their "freshers first aid survival kit" (you'd be surprised how hard it is to find information about it on google!)

Right that's all for now as I'm off to bed to fight this stupid cold because I have work tomorrow and too much to do to be ill! I'll post some more about my preparations soon  Thank you for reading! Goodnight! Xx

6 DAYS TO GO!!!

To start today I think I will tell you a little bit more about me and the course I'm going to do  I'm 18 years old but my birthday is next Tuesday (freshers week birthday 👍) and the course I'm going to do is primary education with a maths specialism. At the end of the three years I'll gain QTS so will be able to teach in a primary school!

Okay, back to today and my preparations for leaving! Today was my last time at work until I return at christmas. It was totally surreal realising that it will be several months before I'm there again and it made it all seem so final. Yes I really am going to university. Yes I am moving away from home. Yes I will be expected to fend for myself…

Tbh I can't wait. It's going to be a completely new atmosphere and a chance to reinvent myself. There'll be no expectations of who I am or what I'm like. I need to make sure I don't change too much though but as long as I'm not pretending to be someone I'm not it will be fine

I still don't know what block/flat I'll be living in yet so I haven't had a chance to start to get to know my new flatmates. Hoping I'll find out tomorrow because it will be nice to know and will take some of the pressure off on Saturday.

I'm off to the doctors tomorrow morning to get my meningitis injection :frown: Not looking forward to that but if it stops me getting meningitis then I guess it's a good thing. And then I'm going out for lunch with my grandparents to say goodbye so that will be nice. I'm expecting it to be very emotional, my Nan has already told me she won't be able to come to the habour on Friday to see me off because she'll be crying too much :frown:

I've been looking at jobs in Reading today and found a few that would be perfect so I tried to apply for them. Annoyingly I can't because I have to have a national insurance number to apply for them but I can't get a national insurance number until I'm actually living in the uk, by which time the applications for the jobs have closed. It's pretty frustrating because I have the right to work in the UK but because I don't have this number yet I can't! Oh well, I'll just have to sort it out asap when I move over there!

Early start tomorrow as I cleverly booked my doctors appointment for 8am so I think I will do some of the reading I have to do for my precourse task (which is way too confusing! Philosophy of maths anyone?) and then will go to sleep. Goodnight xx

T-MINUS 4 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!

Just a short update today as my arm is still killing me from yesterday's injection (why is that I wonder? Injections never normally hurt me for this long…)

I've finally found out what block I'm staying in, what floor I'm on and my room number. I was absolutely thrilled to see that I have a ground floor room! No climbing stairs with heavy boxes on Saturday  I've posted on my halls group trying to find others in my flat but haven't had much success yet, I'm sure I'll find a few people before Saturday though!

I feel really behind with my packing. I've packed all my kitchen stuff and some of my clothes as well as some random bits and bobs but I still have a lot to do. I'm absolutely awful at packing, how can I decide what stays and what comes with me? Any packing tips would be greatly appreciated!

I've come to the conclusion that people working in fancy dress shops like to play "spot the fresher" as I went into town today to buy accessories for freshers week (aka neon tutus/legwarmers for retro sports night, a visor and long socks for pub golf, and flower garlands for hawaiian night) and got asked in all the shops I went into if I was buying things for freshers week.

I think tomorrow will be filled entirely with packing and a trip to my work to sort out my wages (I'm missing 6 hours of earnings and I need them for drinks during freshers fortnight!) Hopefully by the end of tomorrow I'll have finished the majority of my packing and I'll be able to relax a bit

My arm is aching too much now so I'm going to stop writing. Let me know if you have any tips for packing! Goodnight xx

So this is it! My final night in my own bed! Tomorrow afternoon I'll be catching the ferry to England before spending the night in a hotel and then travelling up to Reading on Saturday!

I still haven't finished packing yet which is slightly worrying but the way I see it is that I can buy stuff when I'm there so who cares if I forget something? I have plenty of photos and decorations to make my room feel like home, I have all the paperwork I need and I have the book I've been told I need for my course. Anything else probably isn't essential and I will be able to buy!

I'm feeling slightly emotional tonight about leaving. It's like, I'm ready for the big change but I kind of wish that I have a few more weeks at home to spend with my family. Oh well, I'll be able to Skype them/email them so it won't be like I'm out of contact with them.

I'm on antibiotics as of this afternoon because of my arm :frown: I mentioned in an earlier post that it was sore and swollen from my injection and, as it seemed to be getting worse, I went to the doctors. Apparently it's a) gotten infected, or b) working really well. As he doesn't know which it is, I've been put on antibiotics which I have to take four times a day for the next five days...
Apparently I can still drink whilst taking these which is a relief! But I'll get really drunk after one drink and if I have any more than that in one night I'll probably end up para… not so good! And illstill be taking them on Tuesday which is my birthday so I won't really be able to have many drinks to celebrate :frown: oh well!

I'm hoping to get up fairly early tomorrow morning as I have lots to do before the boat! Good night and if you are moving in to your university tomorrow (as I know quite a few people are!) good luck! Xx

The place where you come from must be soo cool.
I'd live to live in a ppave where everyone knows everyone.
I live in London.

Good luck to you, too, Anne Frank. :wavey: The Uni I go to doesn't have boarding, which I prefer. Feels less like Hogwarts and honestly like a job or something :s-smilie:

Well it's a slight exaggeration tbh but I do know of pretty much everyone (my age anyway) even if I haven't ever spoken to them! It can be nice but it's also super annoying so it will be a nice change moving to reading where there's nearly twice as many people living there!
