If they do their usual 10 sessions then the last one will be Feb 21st. Someone posted 6 days ago that they had been invited for the 21st so there is a chance that all the invites are out now. :s-smilie:
Hopefully a few more still to come but maybe those waiting need to be prepared for disappointment just in case…:frown:
Probably worth a phone call to BSMS tomorrow to find out where they're up to...

They had them in march last year

I know. Not quite sure whether they are sticking to their usual 10 slots or how the dates will work out this year but I'm worried that there can't be many, if any, left :frown:

Yeah me neither
I don't want to build false hope for others

Good really, thanks. It felt just as positive as all her others so she has her fingers crossed (BSMS is her joint 1st choice so she would love to get an offer there). Really hard to tell what her chances are as it depends on so many other variables.
How about you? How are your other choices panning out?

Ok!

Ok!

I've just scrolled through the last couple of months of thread.

No-one has posted interview dates of 7th/14th or 18th Feb (at least if they have then I've missed them). If those three dates have been skipped then that would take us into March as there should still be three more sessions to be released...

Good luck!
Hi guys I just had a question, I am waiting to hear back from BSMS. I like BSMS because of location and the modern teaching method but I was just wandering the fact that none of Sussex or Brighton University are part of the Russell Group. Does this make a difference at all, I know medicine is medicine and for applications for Foundation Year 1 and 2 posts the Hospitals don't know the university that you came from but after that when you apply for Specialist Training Posts they are able to see where you graduated from would this mean that Russell Group Medic Graduates will be looked in a more positive light than other Graduates. I was just wandering because I wanted to go into surgery and that requires specialist training which is a competitive application process and does this have any bearing at all? I understand that most of you guys will be biased and say no but is there any evidence to back up that argument.

From what I've read it transpires that Russell group = prestigious for academic achievement and research
a quote from an article I read sums up my view nicely "success breeds success"
id choose russell group over non if it's the only distinguishing factor
(although I'm biased I guess)

Where you train really shouldn't make that much difference as to whether or not you are successful in getting into surgery; it's incredibly competitive everywhere but depends a lot on your dedication. The link below shows a document containing outcomes for recent graduates (but annoyingly BSMS aren't on it) which demonstrates that numbers are pretty static across the med schools for surgery apart from Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol who produced more surgeons in that decade. BSMS prides itself on excellent anatomy teaching with proper dissection plus it affords you fantastic research opportunities (essential in a competitive career) so, if you are keen, you will have no excuse not to become an amazing surgeon!

I understand what you are saying, but say I get an offer only from BSMS? I never though about this before I was determined on just getting an offer for Medicine regardless of the institution, but now coming to think about it Russell Group Unis do hold a Prestigious stature and when applying later on in your career it may determine the specialist posts that you get, thats why I am asking as I am not sure about this, if anyone one has any more information it's greatly appreciated.

oh dear god
if you get one offer snap it up without thinking about it
you would be laughably foolish not to IMO

That's because the doctors had to be registered in 1999-2001 the first doctors graduated from bsms in 2006 I believe

That's a great table and yeah I do see your point it is very static across all med schools apart from Cambridge and Oxford, also annoying that BSMS isn't on it, but thanks for your help. One more question do you think that graduating from a non Russell group university will have an affect on your chances of getting a Specialist Training post within London or does that come down to your dedication to your chosen specialisation.

Yes. But I don't think there's any reason why they would have less success at graduating future surgeons than the majority of other unis and, possibly, given the amount of research students get to do, they will have more…
