Nah, I don't think so - "Media & Communication Studies" and similar named are separate courses, as far as I know. It's not linked with Journalism, it's more about "Media" in general (however correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Thanks for the link to Leeds, anyway

Any other suggestions for decent (and employable) Journalism Courses?

I'm doing a journalism based course at London College of Fashion which is one of the UAL schools. It's an amazing course - we cover broadcasting, PR and journalism in year 1 but in year 2 you specify in one of those criterias. You may be sitting there thinking well I don't want do fashion - the course I am doing covers everything that is popular (which my lecturers believe is what fashion is) yes we have "fashion studies" classes but its not too strenuous. Our first project is to go out and find a brand new sub-genre of music which can't have been covered by the major music publications and has to be fairly underground. You have to research that music scene so it can just include a couple of bands. 98% of graduates from this course are employed and the contacts you get while there are incredible. I know that London College of Commuication also do a journalism course but many people who started on that have moved over to ours as it covers more bases.

Hope that gives you some insight into a good journalism course!
City is ranked first place for JOURNALISM....

and yes i am on the course....

and yes it is absolutely AMAZING...
btw... City also allow you to combine your degree with Sociology, Psychology or Economics....
Sheffield is also highly rated, as is Uclan. Have a look @ both of them

From what I've heard, you want a course that is NCTJ accredited - it's a vocational course which gives you the journalistic skills for when you're unleashed into the real world

Dash, it sounds really good for me, especially the music part, as I'm totally into music journalism!!!

Is it hard to get a place there?

Excuse me, but I don't know what is "NCTJ" (no idea, I'm from outside the UK so I'm not familiar with the scholar system, all the abbreviations and stuff), and I'm not sure if I know what are you referring to by saying "it's a vocational course..." etc.

Cheers

I've phoned them in September, they've told me that "With my results my offer is worth being taken under consideration" - so at least they're not rejecting me at the very beginning, yay!

But I've heard that they require you to write some sort of a report or an essay and you're being graded for that and that the written form is an obligatory and at the same time very important part of the admissions process - is that true, and if so, is the task hard?

I applied for media studies in 5 differnet uni's and i met up with representatives from 3 of them, and i asked if journlasim falls under this course, and they all told me that you take general media studies in the first year and then specialise in what ever area you want. I'm also interested in journalism, more specifically print journalism, and so far i've been told that "media and communications" is the course to study for that...

Whoever told you that, he or she lied.

I just wanted to know how hard the essays are, as - as far as I know - you're being contacted by the Uni after Jan 15th - obviously if your offer is interesting enough - and then you write the essay/report/whatever. I have no idea about the subjects that may/should be cover, I don't know if I can just choose to write about whatever I want, either.

It has nothing to do with filling up forms, mate

I've withdrawn from the Media Communications course @LondonMet because of finding out that it's usually a Mickey Mouse subject, that doesn't give you a good grounding in either of the branches of the so-called "media" - being straightforward from what I've heard it teaches you rubbish, a lot of nothing, so you come with "general knowledge" that you could obtain by yourself and on your own as well. However, I have not studied that, so I may obviously be wrong, but - by doing some sort of research - I've found that if you want to work in the Media and study for that it's better to specialize - like Media Production, Journalism, etc. So I would rather apply for specified courses, I've seen guys with BAs in Media Communications (and so on) and they were applying for a salesman (door-to-door or a phone one) job, so... It speaks for itself, I guess... :s-smilie:

I'm rather looking for a strictly Journalistic course, here... So I would enjoy any kind of tip from anyone that knows something... Thanks in advance

WHAT?! this is not really reassuring news.. I can't withdraw now! I've already got acceptances! I don't know I checked the modules of the courses i entered, and they seem very relevent to Journalism. I have a friend who is studying in the states, she's studying journalism under the course "mass communications" and most of the courses i applied to were media and communications.

btw, i saw this uni called LSJ, London school of Journlaism, I think it's stricly journalism courses but I wasn't brave enough to apply to it, since my uni councelor never heard of it.

But are you sure what you're talking about because it seems a bit farfetched, especially since my uni councelor told me that it's the major to do for journalism...
