What Unis for Filmmaking/Film production?

(I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this is just where TSR is telling me to put it haha)

I’ve already got AUB, UCA (Farnham) and Buckinghamshire New University on my list as their accommodation fees are within my budget and the courses are what I want but I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations or if film students at these unis would or would not recommend applying here!

For context, I’m looking for anywhere within a 2hr drive from Oxfordshire (this was my compromised distance with my parents :,( ) and I have enough time to build a film portfolio as I am only in my first year of a Level 3 media course.

Any tips on building a successful portfolio would also be appreciated!!

Sorry if I’ve gone on a bit but just looking for an outside opinion from someone who *isnt* friends or family

Thank you

Hi,
Art University Plymouth have a really good source for creating a successful portfolio.
Here's the 5 main points, but the link below goes into a little more detail.

1.

Be selective and reflective. Curate the story you want to tell us, let your personality and passion shine through.

2.

Show your versatility! Include a broad range of your skills and work.

3.

Showcase your strengths - prioritise quality over quantity.

4.

Do not underestimate the creative value of sketches, doodles, or unfinished work if you believe there is a strength in it. Often this work tells us most about what is urgent for you in your approach to your work.

5.

Put your work in the order you want to talk about it. We might ask you to discuss it with us during your interview, so be ready to discuss the pieces you’ve included.

Hope this helps,
Hannah,

AUB was the worst experience of my life (I did Film Production) and I hated it. Most Film Production degrees are useless.

In terms of a portfolio just shove a load of stuff you've made as part of your A - Levels together. Most universities will accept you on the basis of the fact you can write your own name and you can breathe Oxygen. It's not hard to do.

Hi @frxqgy

I believe Kingston is less than a 2 hour drive from Oxfordshire! I don't personally study filmmaking here at Kingston but I believe the course is great! I have seen all the facilities that we offer from the moving image studios to the post production rooms, and have spoken to one of the five technicians for the moving image studios who seems really helpful. That is one of the great things about Kingston, you can use all the workshops and facilities no matter whet subject you study. The loans room is also useful as you can loan any camera and equipment for free!

I would really recommend coming to an open day to get a feel for the university, see the facilities for yourself and speak to students studying the course. Our next open day is Saturday 27th April.

Also there is some good advice here What we are looking for - Kingston School of Arts about what Kingston is looking for in a portfolio.

If you have any more questions about Kingston feel free to ask, hope this helps

Hey Frxqgy,

I'm Will, a BA Media Production student at Bournemouth University.
While I'm not an AUB student, I do know a couple of students currently at AUB who have said they love the uni and it was definitely the right decision for them, and as a BU Media Production student I can testify for the collaboration between the uni's and the local area.

Bournemouth itself, I think is one of the best locations for filming, at your doorstep you have a mix of the countryside, urban street & the coast meaning the options are limitless. Not only that, but Bournemouth's public transport system is phenomenal. You have the Unibus service which has 5 routes connecting students to and from the university from the town centre, Westbourne, Southbourne and even Poole, and you also have Bournemouth as part of the South Western Railway network taking you further west to Weymouth or 2 hours east to London Waterloo stopping at Winchester, Southampton and other places, giving you so much more option for filming.

There is also lots of collaboration between BU and AUB which gives you lots more options for facilities and more crew/actors!
Bournemouth itself is just an amazing place so I would definitely recommend.

I hope this helps

Hi there,

Great to hear that we’re on your list!

If you have any questions abiut AUB/Bournemouth specifically we’d be happy to answer them here

Just a little background on the course: Film Production is part of the Bournemouth Film School (BFS) here at AUB. We understand that the filmmaking process needs a whole host of disciplines and specialisms to flourish, which is why we foster a collaborative environment between our courses. You’ll be able to work closely with Acting students, dressed by Costume students and Performance Design and Film Costume students (who also help with set design), work on post-production with VFX students and even have practical/prosthetic effects applied by Make-up students the list goes on! This mirrors the way you’ll work in industry as part of a multifaceted creative team, preparing you for life outside on university.

For any portfolio queries, a good place to start is the guidelines on our website (https://aub.ac.uk/apply/portfolios) and you can find course-specific ones info the Film Production page (https://aub.ac.uk/course/film-production).

Later in the year we also offer portfolio development days to help you prepare the most robust portfolio you can if you email our Schools team ([email protected]) they should be able to provide more info.

As for the comment from Thisismyusertsr on their experience we take this kind of feedback very seriously. This particular user has been quite prolific on here for some time and has repeatedly ignored our offers to discuss their complaints and provide support. If you’d like to know what it’s really like at AUB, we’d recommend speaking with current students using the Unibuddy chat feature on our website, messaging our admissions team ([email protected]) with any questions, or coming along to an Open Day (the next one is 29 June).

Hope this helps and hopefully see you soon,

AUB

Hi,

Hope you are well! I did a Film Production course at the University of Wolverhampton which from Oxfordshire is just under a 2 hour drive. The course was absolutely fantastic, as well as the student life despite Covid and since it's improved even more with a great student union and so on.

The course, included predominantly practical work through all aspects of pre production - production - post production. It also included theory based classes which were great fun and insightful. By the end of the three years, I not only had knowledge of equipment, softwares and techniques but I had experiences with them too and examples of my work to show at the end of each module, which built my portfolio up immensely. The lecturers and staff are extremely supportive and down to earth and understanding throughout every step. Even after University they stay in touch and look forward to hearing where you go next. It's a lovely environment to learn in. We also had our new screen school with industry standard facilities and equipment which is incredible to have and you should definitely check out!

Here is a link to help with portfolio building and is great advice! - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe5LfBTx/

Kind regards and best of luck on your journey,
