What's the alternative to starting with the "clutch, biting point" technique?

I've read that this technique is bad as it causes excess wear on the clutch plates.

My question is: what is the alternative?

Its simply a learning tool to get used to the clutch, eventually you'll it very smoothly, rather than just holding the clutch at a certain point and trying to reach the right biting point which takes a while for learner and new drivers.
As Iqbal says in his post above, once you have learnt clutch control you won't be faffing about holding the biting point etc except in a few specific situations ( preventing roll back on a hill start).

once you are an experienced river you'll be able to jump into most vehicles and have squared away where the biting point is within a couple of miles / minutes .
