The USA should now be punished

The CIA routinely misled the White House and Congress over its harsh interrogation programme for terrorism suspects and its methods, which included waterboarding, were more brutal than the agency acknowledged, a Senate report said on Tuesday.

The programme, devised by two agency contractors to squeeze information from suspects after the Sept. 11 2001 attacks, was ineffective and never led to the disruption of a single plot, the report by the Senate Intelligence Committee said.

The programme ran from 2002 to 2006 and involved questioning al Qaeda and other captives in secret detention facilities in various countries, including Afghanistan, Poland, Romania and Thailand.

DISCUSS: Should the USA face global punishment for committing torture? If yes, what methods should be used?

Russia: The USA should face economic sanctions orchestrated by the UN for breech of very basic human rights. Is it a surprise the USA has many enemies when they seem willing to breach the human rights of individuals for nothing in return?

New Zealand: We will stand by the USA. The USA is not to blame for the CIA misleading the White House. The president cannot govern to the best of his ability if he does not have accurate information to base a decision on. The CIA should be investigated and sufficient action taken when those responsible for the false information have been identified.

Germany believes the US should simply learn from its lesson and move on, perhaps taking influences from Europe and neighboring nations. Punishment would only encourage anti-US sentiment which isn't preferable for Germany, as we Europeans sit in between the Western and Eastern world.
Canada

Having an extremely close working bond with the CIA, Canada feels the organisation has let the States down. Nevertheless, it actively plays a huge role in world security and should not be discredited for this. Canada politely requests that the US reviews the CIA to help improve it further.

United States of Mexico

As a border country, Mexico has complete confidence in the US and the CIA. It does not believe sanctions are appropriate given that terrorism at the time was a significantly major threat to the US, it simply responded to protect its people.

Turkey believes the west, as usual, is being soft on the USA on severe crimes they have perpetrated. The CIA interrogation program has been an open secret for many years, it only takes a 5 year report to make it official? It's time to at least see some moral condemnation from the MUN for their ineffective, volatile techniques to achieve an aimless goal. The US government is responsible for not handling their own intelligence agency.

 It needs opinions of other nations to decide and get to a conclusion.
Greece understands that the US wanted to do what any country would do by protecting herself and her citizens, but we must bring into question where the flaws of their justice system lie. Greece believes it is up to the USA to amend its system, and is willing to offer appropriate advice where necessary or demanded.

Thanks for the support
New Zealand is not particularly worried about terrorists being tortured. As the CIA director confirms, interrogation saves lives. Interrogation is the unnecessary evil needed to find those committed to destroying what we stand for. Sometimes in life we must play the Devil's game to be one step ahead in preventing attacks, and bringing to justice those responsible for attacks.

The Netherlands belives putting sanctions on the US and holding them on Russia is not fiscally possible. We instead suggest that the US pay a $50billion fine to the international development fund and move on.
