Assuming that 34 is really 3/4, I get x=2a/3x=2a/3 by conservation of angular momentum. Do you have the answer to check?

Me too.

Iw before collision = I times 0.75 w + x(m times 0.75x)

i.e. angular momentum before collision = angular momentum of rod after collision + moment of momentum of particle
