The Student Room Group

So apparently students in the north get ripped off on their rent

According to this article on telegraph (and Guardian/Huff), students in 'the north' pay more for their rent than locals living in the same areas. I know the rent is lower (in terms of absolute pounds) than most places in the south, but still, doesn't seem to be fair! Having said that, student grants are not materially higher for students living in expensive cities, so all in, northern students probably come out on top, given that the average cost of living in the north is quite a lot cheaper than in the south (Greggs vs Cornish Pasty shop.)
