I think I'll do something quantum mechanics related but I honestly have no idea how I can present what is essentially maths to a group of teachers who know nothing about maths

I mean QM has a lots of analogies, but that's just boring compared the to the maths. Unless you wanna sound like Jim Al-Khalili by describing spin up and spin down as 'green' or 'red' lol. The most basic maths in QM is probably straight up integration say normalising a simple wave function. Tbh you could probably say anything and they would believe you if you sounded confident enough lol. My friend did his on string theory and if it had any applications

Since there is no qualification I'm basically just going to learn all the maths etc I would have done over the summer anyway and then I'll just quickly throw together a presentation about something I sort of did to keep them happy

Sounds good, I recommend the series of lectures online by Allan Adams. Those include quite a bit of maths

my audience is going to be the year 12/13 EPQ students (I know for sure nobody in my year's EPQ group is interested in physics) plus humanity/language teachers lol
I don't even know how I am going to write a dissertation on mathsy topic which goes beyond A level. I think I have taken up a big pain...

He's the one from the MIT open course channel isn't he? Think I've seen some of his videos before

Yeah. There's also Leonard Susskind from Stanford, but I find him hard to follow. He tends to write stuff on the board then leave it and then go to another section of the board, write more stuff. I prefer Adams

I can't actually believe this - for the past week or so I've been focussing on my exams as I have had 6 exams in 5 days and tonight I was going to book the open day for Cambridge and it says that booking has now closed for the two open days in July.

I would just turn up to be honest. No-one checks if you've booked or anything like that  (unless it's changed in the 2 years since I went)

What do you have left?

M2, physics and chemistry AS1 and AS2 and S2.

Yeah - sorry I didn't realise as on the events listings it said that booking has closed but I have now used the link above and booked the event. Do you also have to book to see the different departments?

Oh wow! Physical NatSci I presume :colondollar:
Question: why are so many people looking to a Phys NatSci application as opposed to Bio?

Good question :colonhash:
But I don't mind- decrease the competition

Most NatScis on here want to do something strongly related to Physics and so are inclined towards Physical. It also depends on AS subject choice, i.e, those not doing Biology will most likely apply for the Physical route and vice versa.

Some people also look down on 'Biological Sciences' and wouldn't want to touch anything 'Biological' with a barge pole, which is a bit sad really.

Also Chemists would identify with Physical more than Bio. So it's 2 of the three sciences vs 1.

Intra-STEM snobbery?! How will us poor arts students ever cope?

Yeah I thought about mentioning that but I realised that chemists can easily go down either route? For example, if I wanted to specialise in Chemistry in the third year, I can do this after entering through the Biological route?

But I guess most people who are seriously considering Chemistry also take Physics at A Level so this is rarely ever the case :erm:

You're still awake? How was the nail painting session lol. Also yeah 2nd and 3rd year Chem at Cambridge is quite physical in the sense

Yes, intra-STEM snobbery
Some don't even count Biology as a science.
It makes us biological sciences students more sympathetic towards your situation though

Lol I was watching a TV show and I'm not really tired. And it didn't happen :colonhash: I ended up going out instead
Yeah I guess there can be switches from Biological to Physical and vice versa
