ah yes, chemistry experiments, those were the days! random splint bonfires on the workbenches, mates burning half the contents of my pencilcase before i noticed... such fun!

once a week?! how come? and what?! someone actually enjoying school?! that's unheard of...

you can tell i'm "very intellligent and capable" just from reading a few posts on an internet forum?! that's one hell of a skill, i'm impressed! :p: but thanks - you're more confident than i am!!

I set my hair on fire once

hee hee I'm not enjoying it really but sometimes it's fun

Yeah my school doesn't run the course on the timetable - not History either so I only get it a few times a week which means I have to make the extra time myself. It's a hell of a pressure

Oh yes :p: hee hee and you're welcome. You're probably more confident than I am actually...I feel like I'm failing everything. I need to do more work..much more

Anyway, got my fingers crossed for you

Great bar, as long as you can get a seat. The number of times I've been in there and not been able to move! I like the Whey Pat - proper pub!

I never saw the appeal in the Cellar...my top four were Lafferty's, the Vic, the Whey Pat and the Union

 That's no mean feat! I can imagine the pandemonium now! Seeing as you're still with us I'm assuming it wasn't a complete disaster?!:p: Ah well, you've only got to put up with it for a wee while longer, then it's on to a nice, safe history course! What could possibly go wrong there?!

Your school doesn't do history? I must say I've never heard of that before - how come? Does it specialise in something else, or is just that it won't fit into your timetable? Ah well, committing all that extra time can't have damaged your uni application!

I don't think there's any student who couldn't do any more work than they are doing, so I wouldn't worry about it! For example, instead of writing this, I could be doing some history coursework... In terms of interest levels it's definitely a close call!

Cheers, my fingers are also crossed for you (although it does make typing this message a little difficult)!

You think they're going to ID every person in a group of about 50? :p: Even the Vic doesn't bother IDing people during freshers week (they wait until you've got your matriculation card - once the students have their cards, though, the Vic is brutal...but I've twice managed to plead my way in - the first time I had no intention of drinking and was chatting with one of the girls I was supposed to be meeting in there. I said I'd miss the meeting if I had to go back to get my ID from Fife Park, so they let me in 'just this once'...the second time, I knew one of the doormen, so started having a chat with him about the pool society and stuff...after a few minutes of saying how we missed him in the soc (he was barred from the union because he's a violent drunk) and getting the piss taken out of me for being on the lacrosse team, I said goodbye and walked in...dunno if he even realised he hadn't ID'd me )

Shouldn't really be condoning this...but it's what happens. I was only 17 during freshers week

Haha yeah...I was 17 throughout my entire 1st year! Sure I got kicked out of a few pubs now and then, but overall most places won't ID. Mind you, if you go to the union, do not drink alcohol!! If they catch you, they'll ban you right there and then for 6 months (happened to my mate). If you've got an older brother/sister with an old form of ID (such as a matric card or EU ID card), bring it with you and scratch the photo a wee bit...worked for me

Yeah...shouldn't be condoning this though, oops

You really shouldn't be condoning that - it's illegal :p: As long as you're not ID'd it's the pub at fault, not you

I never got into bother over it, but when I went on the lacrosse pub crawl in first year, I was scared of being caught while at the union, so I got one of the fourth-year girls to get a drink for me...realised the following week that she worked at the union :>.<:

ha ha setting my hair on fire - that was funny...I've done a lot of other stupid things mind..oh fun

My school does History for Higher level but not Advanced Higher. In fact; the school only offers four courses at Advanced Higher level: English and three sciences so I had to get special permission to do the other 2

hee hee  Thank you....

You're friendly..I can't wait to meet you in freshers' week

crikey, you've done more than setting your hair on fire?! what on earth possessed you to stay in school if you've got a record of doing things like that?! :p: and you're still doing chemistry!? you must have a death wish!

cos i didn't really have a clue about the highers system, i've just looked it up (wikipedia, what a site!:p:) and, as far as i can tell, it's a bit like a uni course, in the sense that it's mostly independent study? quite a good idea if so, gets you prepared for uni, i suppose, and it doesn't affect your uni application! not exactly a great selection of courses at your school though! do most people stay on and do advanced highers, or just go to uni a year earlier instead?

 thank you, likewise!

Think you meant poor you having me in your class! :p:
Just us 2 I think!
At least we'll know someone in the lectures

oh I love wikipedia :love: I learn everything from there :redface: Yep the Advanced Highers are mostly independent study :smile: Most people stay on until sixth year. I know of only one person in my year who went to uni straight after sitting her Highers. Most people only sit one or two Advanced Highers or just 3 Advanced Highers but I've gone and taken on more work than anyone else in my year :redface: Some people choose to sit Highers over two years or do intermediate courses and then Highers in the Sixth year. It's fairly flexible ;yes;

Yes my school doesn't offer many courses. I was forced to take subjects I didn't like for my Standard Grades  There isn't a lot of resources for Advanced Higher and because we don't really need them no one really cares unless you're the one sitting them :frown: This year has been so hard so far :s-smilie:

ah you're welcome  hee hee

yeah, i reckon 17's too young to be going to uni, really! why've you given yourself more work than you need?! particularly when you have to do all the work yourself! ah well, i'm sure you'll get there!

I'm going to the 11th April open day also
Well I am definitely going to St. Andrews now after an excruiatingly long unplanned gap year away from beaches and castles! ('Twas a sad, sad thing but St. Andrews deferred my entry, so it's all good.) I can't wait. St. Andrews was always my first choice. Hope to see you all there.

And about the setting hair on fire thing... I don't think that's too bad. One time I burned a hole in my carpet because my homework caught on fire. Good times, good times.

 How on earth did you manage that?!
Also, what course are you taking?

I think my existence alone is enough to manage that. haha. But I had a candle on my desk at the time and my homework papers somehow got dangerously close and then I had no clue what to do so I tried to carry them to the sink but ended up dropping them on the carpet along the way to prevent my hand getting burned to a crisp. Brilliant.

I'm debating between English and IR... I'm taking both my first year. I really wish they had a joint degree in those two subjects but alas they do not. I have an unconditional arts offer because I'm American and they think I'm indecisive, which is true to be fair, so I didn't have to commit to a subject.

Look forward to seeing you too.. although I still haven't 100% decided on if I should go to St A or not!

I went on the 13th March. It was great!
The biology building is beautiful and the dept seemed really friendly. We got shown around by 2 professors.. one was a zoologist (who is studying birdsong!) and the the other was a neuroscientist. They were really nice.

I hope you have a good time!

Just prepare yourself for the strong winds :p:

Is anyone else only going to be 17 when they start? I feel so young lol.
Got a conditional offer to do the MSc in IS&Economics. Previous semester exams went pretty well so I should be safely able to satisfy the conditions, yay!

I'm Irish but I used to live in Ayr for 6 years when I was younger so I'm looking forward to coming back to Scotland for a year or so!

St. Andrews looks like a nice place, if a bit remote. Anyone know if there are many Irish people in the uni?

Also (sorry if this appears a bit strange), is there any opportunities to learn Japanese in the college or the nearby area? Any Japanese students come to the uni each year? Its just that I've been learning Japanese for the past couple of years and would like to continue doing so if possible.

Cheers.
