I've swapped between a backpack, a tote bag, and (currently use) a large handbag. 
I need a bag that has a lot of space for me to carry my notes, laptop, and general stuff I need. (Hairbrush, drink, etc)
(BTW this thread might have been best suited in University Life, rather than in 2014 Freshers blogs!)

That's my general purpose bag.
Depends on whether I'm in for the whole day or just for a few hours. I'll take a large bag if I need a bottle of water, lunch, notes, books etc.
