QUICK RESPONSES PLEASE! Part- time apprenticeship and studying part time

Hi All,

I would really like some helpful advice on this as soon as possible!

I have been offered to work in a Nursery on an apprenticeship for 2 days a week. The workplace would like to put me on a Level 3 Childcare course.

My questions:
Would I be able to do an apprenticeship and my degree with OU as my main concerns are:

a). Would I have to contribute to the NVQ course fees as I'm 24 and by the time the apprenticeship finishes I will be 25 (depends- but could take a year to complete)?

b) Would the student finance affect the apprenticeship as I am 24?

c) Do I need to notify the OU of the apprenticeship?

Any other advice would be helpful!

Thanks,

Hey Amrita, its Laila. How are you?

The course costs around £300 and you would have to pay it yourself as you're 24.
I don't think there are loans anymore to cover the fees for people 24 and over, read this :

and you don't have to notify the Open Uni as they usually allow people to work alongside their studies :

A level 3 course usually takes 2 yrs to complete (possibly longer depending on your circumstances), the OU shouldnt need to be told about the apprenticeship as its technically a job. As for the NVQ fees, if the nursery is partnered with a college to deliver the course then you shouldn't have to pay if they consider you a full time student, but if you are a part time student or are entering as a private candidate you may have to pay (or your work may pay for you.)

I honestly wouldnt bother doing the apprenticeship and the level 3 if you are doing a degree. It makes more sense to get a proper well paid job (even if its not in the childcare sector) to support you through your studies and then get experience working with children as a volunteer/hobby instead. Once you obtain your degree, no-one will care about the Level 3.

All the best.
