If 2 diploid cells would fuse during fertilisation what effect would that have on the cell made?

It just wouldn't work out. Too much DNA would be in the cell. It's not something you have to discuss in an exam I don't think :P but either way, I don't see how it'd happen. Gametes are *always* haploid... no?
