How Was Cancer Diagnosed in the 19th century?

Does anyone know how they diagnosed cancer in the late 19th century. I can't seem to find anything apart from how they treated it.
The 19th century proletariat could not even afford a comprehensive medical care and such was reserved to the bourgeoisie. So the workers unfortunately died unconcious of cancer. Social inequality still exists when it comes to private means of treatment.
