Every time I hear the word ''DOxbridge'' I just role my eyes and groan internally. It's so based on unwarranted association

In hindsight, I wish I had applied to Durham just so I could have rejected them once they had (inevitably) given me an offer.

Don't get me wrong, I actually believe that crap unis have their place, and in many cases deliver positive outcomes. I also don't blame the unis themselves, after all they are only going to market themselves in the best possible light. The problem as I see it is that expectations are completely unrealistic.

There are far too many students taking on undergraduate study at lower-end institutions who are under the impression that their degree will deliver a positive life-changing result in the short term. This is often fed to them by a combination of the universities, ill-informed parents and overwhelmingly - teachers.

Where crap unis do a lot of good is in delivering degrees for people who just need "a degree" now, or may in the long term - just today it was announced that all new police officer candidates must have "a degree". Many levels of the civil service and NHS require "a degree", as do large employers - a person who read law at Middlesex may not find any benefit from their degree in the short term, but if they go into local or national government, they may find after 8-10 years, that degree very valuable. The obvious one is teaching - there's always demand for teachers, and you only need "a degree" and the pay and conditions aren't bad at all.

Also, some people who do well in their undergrad can get themselves on postgrad at much better institutions and take things from there. If you get on Postgrad at Cambridge, you can bet your life all your MMU stash will be replaced in a heartbeat and your facebook, cv and linkedin will only say St Johns College Cambs, or whatever.

And finally, there has to be the space for unis to improve. A couple of the ex-polys aren't bad at all - some of them were pretty good to begin with. Hertfordshire springs to mind - as I understand it, when it first became a uni, it was terrible, but a lot of that was structural -several colleges had come together to form the university, and they were spread out over a very large distance. 25 years later, it's all in one place and doing very nicely. Better lecturers, better research, better students, and onwards and upwards.

So long as potential students are honest about what they can achieve, and are dealt with honestly by parents and teachers, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you decide to read law at Middlesex, it's going to be very very tough to be a city solicitor. But if all you need is a law degree, because your mum owns a law firm - then what's the big deal? Taking Business and Management at CCCU isn't going to make you Chief Exec of a major multinational in the short term. You might be lucky to get to be a manager at TopShop -but it depends what you want. You can be a manager at TopShop without a degree, but it's possible that internal promotion to other things in the group might require a degree.

Hello,
Middlesex University is built on a pillar of embracing diversity and being inclusive;

What does this actually mean, in straightforward English? It sounds like a corporate mission statement lifted from a 'stakeholder consultation paper'. These sort of opaque, soundbite statements don't really help users of TSR.
Hello,

Every year we conduct the NSS, a survey which allows all final year undergraduate students at UK institutions to feed back on their student experience.

The results of Middlesex University show that the overall satisfaction is 83%, showing that our students are happy about our teaching, academic support, organisation and personal development.

Additionally the latest DHLE statistics show that 91% of our graduates get a job within six months after graduation.

Some of our alumni are Guardian columnist Suzanne Moore, TV presenter Dermot O’ Leary, comedian Alan Carr and actress Dame Helen Mirren.

Ragards,

Middlesex University

Is MiddleSex University that bad? There is Middlesex University Campus in Mauritius and apparently It's a good university...

ummm yeah, but thats like 2000 miles away. Mauritius isn't covered by my Oyster card..durrr
My past experience of Middlesex University was horrible. The time I spent there was wasted and damaging. I would advise anyone who is currently there to do a transfer to another university. You can transfer AT ANY TIME to another university, and they will be HAPPY to take you. I would recommend Kingston University. I would also strongly recommend Birkbeck College - part of London University. These places are professional universities.

I transferred, and the Student Loan Company immediately switched my Tuition fees to the new university. Bye Bye Middlesex.

Dont feel stuck.
If the lecturers are rubbish and
if the students are in gangs and
if the students are drug dealing and
if students are getting people stabbed, and
if there is hateful indoctrination by socialist workers against the male students and
if there are hateful anti-male posters being put up around university by feminists,
then VOTE with your pocket - and LEAVE that dump.
STOP feeding them your money
STOP the course immediately and TRANSFER. You will be better off.

A general recommendation from someone who has lived in London for 20 years -
Choose a university thats part of the Russell Group - they are generally very professional
Choose a pleasant part of London. For those new to London, the South West of London is the most safe, and most beautiful.

In contrast, the location where Middlesex University is based is deprived, nasty, gang-ridden, dirty, sordid, violent, drug ridden, and blighted - and most Londoners stay away from it - no one goes there by choice.

I would like to share my experience with Middlesex university. I am at my last year here and since the beginning of my journey the teachers have been very unprofessional and the lectures are just very bad but of course there are 1 or 2 teachers whom are very good out of 10 teachers for example. Most teachers here are after their income, not to teach. Rather than helping you achieve the best they put you down and tell the students that they will fail. The education system here is rubbish, at all costs please avoid this university. I have been here for 3 years and have not learned a single thing. They expect you to know these things before hand and they will not teach you. Teachers here are not willing to teach. As they say its all about the 'MONEY'. If you are coming here to study Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology. Please choose another university and save your future.

You were in your final year and you should know better from the 2nd year, not to cherry pick and have favourites with anyone. This lecturer is bad and etc and etc. I've even had lecturers tell me to be proud of my course, which I'm not going to say. My course was rock solid hard. Made me feel hopeless to pass. I've even seen students not make it out themselves and had lecturers giving them ideas where to go, that they maybe didn't want to go into and you start a thread like "Don't study Computer Engineering, IT or whatever". Had me feeling proud of my course because I almost failed mine.

It's normal for lecturers to appear "unprofessional" when you are in the third and final year. Like they're happy to have you around and they're having fun teaching, especially after you finished and completed your 2nd year.

I've been thinking about this thread for a while since I've seen it. I'm aware it's three years old but for some reason, I have similar reactions to my experiences at the university. I'm not much of a fan of the first post to be honest. I've had experiences and seen experiences where students have lashed out against lecturers because they felt misled or betrayed but I think there's a certain reality they want you to experience. The location is known for just being in the shadows in my opinion compared to other areas around the country. I've had times when my lecturers refused me help but after further thought, because of the times I tried to complain or keep quiet, it may have been better to complain early. Then I had to sit and think about why, only to find that other students (all local students who are mixed with the foreign international students) were only being nice to me, so they wouldn't get singled out and caught, which may been seen by the lecturer before anything was done. I mean this was in my 2nd year and getting over that was hard, so if that's something that you felt carried into the final year and want to vent out.

It's rather clear that the lecturers cared for their own safety and I'm telling you, some students I had studied with, were really disgruntled to the point where many students talked about them and didn't want to near them because they would lash out, so why does a lecturer have to be on the other end of that?! Many of us student, we are like that, we didn't want to work with that disgruntled person and just marginalise them and think the lecturers would sort that out. It was tough. It had taken me a while to think about that. Some of them I knew, also dropped out.

It scares me more to even say, when I mean local as students, I mean the folks who grew up and live nearby the university in North London. I grew up around here in North London. I went college elsewhere outside North London and return to find that I wasn't like the locals anymore who were students and I somehow didn't relate to any of them. I really didn't care and I could defend myself and etc. Still had to take care of them a lot and that paid off in my favour. Got in the way of what I wanted from producing the work but it worked and saved a lot of trouble.

I think those other students who were like that, would turn up and ruin it for everyone and it creates a disconnect between the students and the lecturer and it gets thrown at the other students. It really is almost like the lecturers didn't bother with some students. There was also another time, when personally, I wasn't a fan on some of the lecturers however I just didn't want them marking my paper and giving me a fail. No, not them, if I liked them or not. I wanted to return home with a good grade. That's all and there were times when I had to go after lecturers and ask them "didn't you mean this?" or "how about this?". I didn't want them to mark my paper down for that and just to make sure they were briefing me correctly. Found that out and never saw them again. Doesn't matter if you liked them or not.

Again, the reason I've posting and bumping this thread, not the first time I've had someone complain about this to the point where they've said it was a horrible university. Not the first but I really think the first post really ruined to why it was considered to be the "worst" university. I kind of expected a bit more.
