Why does India have such a big public defecation problem?

Mainly due to corruption I presume. Prioritising a space program among many other things when you have dire poverty/inequality is evidence in itself.

question, what is hinduism 'to the letter'?
what is 'pure' hinduism?

hindus themselves dont agree on basic what is fundamental to hinduism like whether god exists or core scriptures so how can an entire country follow 'hinduism to the letter'?

and lol yes muslims also defecate in the public in india. go to any muslim majority area in any indian city and you'll find it happening. muslim men with skullcaps defecating in the open.

yes chandigarh is the cleanest city in india. chandigarh is 80% hindu for those idiots linking lack of cleanliness to Hinduism

Exactly. I agree with you.

Well I have never heard what karmyog is before so unless it's a reputable newspaper I'm not going to believe it. He's not dumb that he would say such stuff that too publicly.

It's possible that they do but I can assure you that things are changing quickly Didi.

It's from his book actually:

I dont deny he probably said so but its also entirely believable that he has changed his stance. else why would he stand on top of red fort talking about the need to build toilets during his first independence day speech to the nation as prime minister?

since then the govt has built 3 million+ toilets with a huge target set and andhra pradhes and gujarat have been declared 100% open defecation free

Because of the culture and a lack of education. Countries like Sri Lanka which are in a similar economic state are still much cleaner than India, mainly because of education and a better culture. While economic growth has led to better standards of living for the middle and upper classes, this hasn't translated to illages in India which suffer from bad public services, traditional ways of life and a lack of education. I've been to one of the cleaner parts of India, Chennai, and the difference between that place and Mumbai is astonishing. To because the state government in Tamil Nadu promotes equal opportunities and education and has taken steps to change traditional social norms whereas most of North and Central India hasn't.

I've been to Chennai as well and to me it seemed to be relatively less clean as compared many North Indian cities like Chandigarh, Dehradun and Shimla etc and also Bangalore.

Far fewer Muslims defecate in the open, especially interesting considering that they tend to be poorer than Hindus anyway due to systematic oppression by the case system and Hindu society. This is a Hindu culture problem. You don't see this problem in Muslim countries to the same extent as in India.
Because it's a **** 💩 country :ahee:

Actually Haryana,Uttrakhand, Punjab, and Gujarat aswell have also become open dedication free this year alongside Himachal, Sikkim and Kerala.

http://m.huffingtonpost.in/2017/06/22/haryana-and-uttarakhand-declared-open-defecation-free-states-und_a_22583628/

And I think the number would be way higher than 3 million.

Tamil Nadu follows a different form of Hinduism, folk Hinduism, which is less connected to the traditional Hindu scriptures and is more focused on local village/tribal traditions rather than traditional Hindu beliefs. It's very different from Hinduism in the rest of India. I have a lot of Tamil Hindu friends and their beliefs are different from most Hindus.

No completely incorrect. I'm from Northern India and(Punjab) have been to Chennai just a few days ago.

They actually stress on scripture more than north Indians. Many people know scripture heart. They are actually more religious whereas people hardly care these days in north India.

"Muslims in India don't tend to do it."
Evidence?

They do do it, but at a lesser rate than Hindus.
This has led to Hindus having a higher child mortality rate according to the Economist.

Evidence is growing that India must urgently correct its cultural practices, though it is sensitive to say so. Studies of India’s population show how since at least the 1960s child mortality rates have consistently been higher in Hindu families than Muslim ones—though Muslims typically are poorer, less educated and have less access to clean water. Today, out of every 100 children, 1.7 more Muslim than Hindu ones survive to five years, a big gap.

Mr Spears and his colleagues argue that this can be explained only by differences in sanitation habits. A 2005 government survey, the most recent national one, found that 67% of all Hindu households, rural and urban, practised open defecation, compared with just 42% of Muslim ones. (In rare places where there is more open defecation among Muslims than Hindus, the mortality gap is reversed.)

Reminds me of an argument I got into with some Indian people on Twitter a few months ago. There was an article about Britain beginning to reduce the amount of aid it sends to India. People [ Indians mostly] were outraged at this. I said Britain has it's own problems and there are people in the UK who are homeless, or cannot afford to feed their families, or have to wait sometimes years for operations because of lack of funding. I suggested if India didn't spend billions on a space program they would be able to look after their own people better, wouldn't rely on handouts from Britain and should stop with a space program it clearly cannot afford just to make itself seem important. Well to a man every one of them tore into me. "you" [ i.e. British people] robbed India's resources and stole from us and you owe us big time and should have to pay and keep paying financially forever more etc. The vitriol and hatred towards me for daring to suggest India should prioritise looking after its people instead of spending billions on rockets was unreal.

i lived in chennai for around 10 years (bought up, etc). I've never seen anyone stressing scriptures. Where did u get this detail from?

Because there are more people in India than in Pakistan duh.
Where in India Have you been? And have you been to Chandigarh or Bangalore?

Btw sure India has its problems but it is 50 times better than your country(Bangladesh).

India gives billions of dollars in aid to Bangladesh every year as well.

India is not any better than Bangladesh lol, open defecation is nowhere near as common in Bangladesh and they don't have cows and stray dogs roaming the streets
I'm not allowed to post why without getting banned.
