How is this for both quality and quantity?

3 days shadowing GPs in practice
1 week shadowing surgeon in the Theatre watching surgery
1 week in hospital looking at many fields of work throughout a hospital

I am yet to do any work experience but these have all been organised and are as good as done.

Also, I'm thinking about 1 week working in the evenings in a care home or something, what would you suggest I do?

Are you a gap year applicant? Good on quantity. Quality? That depends on what you learnt from it. Being in a nursing home for a day can be better in terms of quality than watching surgery for a week.

Is two months of volunteering in a hospital in Somalia enough for me to apply? I know its nothing compared to most applicants on here, but it's literally impossible for me to obtain any WE in the country I currently reside in, so I had to travel all the way to Somalia to get something done. Do you think I have any chance? (Although I did learn quite alot from that experience)

Where was this hospital? What kind of things did you gain from the experience, and how do you think those relate to medical practice in the UK? Just a little confused here, which country do you currently reside in? As an international applicant, you'll have some room to manoeuvre when it comes to work experience I guess.

Mogadishu by any chance? Well, at least you didn't get yellow fever or something :p:

W/E and stuff in Somalia is fine. It's a different experience, but it's a good one.

I don't know. That's why I asked.

I currently reside in Cairo, but being a non-Egyptian I can't do any work experience here so I had to do some when I went on holiday to Somalia. It was a hospital that specialised in Obstetric Fistula. It was quite small, if you compare it to hospitals in the UK. I went with the doctors during their rounds, talked to patients, and gave out coffee and tea. I stayed there two months. And I'm a British national by the way.

Erm, no not Mogadishu. I went to Hargeysa in Somaliland, its quite nice there compared to the rest of the country.

(Other post) Ok, there's quite a lot to talk about there. Any primary care experience you can organise?

Somalia - must've been some holiday, huh? :woo:

I'd love to go there and just forget about everthing for a week.
Somalia is the last place I'd want to go on holiday :p: Well, ok, one of the last places
hi im aplying to study medicine in october and im trying to get some work exp at a GPs, have called and visited loads but everybody is giving same answer - we dont do work exp here bcoz of patient confidentiality, even at reception desk.
has anyone got any work exp at a gp?? and if yes, HOW?? and where??
and if i dont end up getting any, how crucial is this to my application?
i will have a weeks work exp at each of two other hospitals, one abroad.
thanks

ps my responce may be delayed, going on holiday for a week but ur help is hugely apreciated
Do you have any contacts whatsoever? Talk to the doctors during your work experience, they might know GPs that provide work experience. Where do you live, by the way? I know some places.

Try going out of your way a bit. All the GPs local to me had the same answer. I got work experience in a GP about ten miles away, and they said they accepted me because it'd be less likely for me to know the patients.

Those are amazing! You're pretty much guaranteed a place with all those!

Which websites have you designed?

i made websites on easy websites, eg moonfruit. Did it for GCSE media coursework, its not really extra curricular. Also, i started origami for my application, really easy and cheap.
