Do employers care what Uni you go to?

I really want to go tko Imperial purely because of it's academic reputation, but on the other hand I'd like to go to Sheffield because I like the city and the course.
I was wondering if my chances at getting a high paying job change if I go to Sheffield over Imperial, because obviously it's in London and has an amazing reputation.

Why? ): I really can't make up my mind
Damn I was really thinking we would have completely different unis here. Both are very good, if employers were picky as in some applications have asked for 'Russel group uni graduates' to apply both would still be accepted. Either way even if a job does say x uni etc just put in a good application and try anyways. Though we're talking both good unis here so that doesn't really apply.

Some employers do care, some employers don't. On the precautionary principle alone, you therefore ought to presume they do.

Other than that, you are paying the same amount to go somewhere much better than somewhere else - there aren't many other purchases you make in life where, if everything is the same price, you don't pick the best available. You wouldn't do it if it was a car or a house, why do it with a Uni?
do you care more about having a high paying career or having fun at uni?

Honestly the reputation. You would definitely be at a better standing all things removed with an Imperial degree.
Besides, they both have the same tuition so u might as well try and get as much out of it as possible

Depends what career you want. Law, finance, IP, consulting.. I think it’s pretty clear university matters. Other industries it’s less important.

No, they don't care. They care that you went to a decent university, your grades and your internships. A guy I know went to Sheffield to study biomedical engineering and he's a Canary Wharf banker and has his own 2 bedroom in Shoreditch. It's not about your degree, it's about you.

Which course would you be taking?

Software engineering MEng with a year in industry at sheffield, comp sci (software engineering) MEng at imperial
most employers don't care, it's more about you as an individual

Hmmm - I'm normally of the view that which university you go to matters far less than people believe. You've found an example where my guess would be that this general rule does not apply. For a lot of degrees in your place (based on what I know as a non specialist in the scientific fields) I might well chose Sheffied. For CS - I think I would chose Imperial. There is a big enough difference in perception and graduate outcomes to be significant.

Hi! Current student here. Which course are you looking into? Maybe I can help more after I know which stream or industry you're looking into since I've been studying in Sheffield for 3 years and have a fairly good idea about jobs after graduation in certain courses.
Sheffield is mainly a student city so by far, my experience in this city has been amazing in terms of meeting new people, developing my interpersonal skills and achieving more academic and personal growth. It's fairly easy to get well-paid part time jobs over here in the city too, if you're interested in that. But most importantly, it has a great academic network and connections to different industries.
Let me know which course you're interested in and maybe I can help more!

This is such a late reply, been busy with coursework and such, sorry! I'm interested in the Computer Science courses and the Software engineering MEng with a year in industry course has my eye.
In terms of employment it is better to go to a uni that has a good reputation in the field you are studying and wish to go into. Generically prestigious unis arent nessecarily the best in every course so it's good to research course league tables not just overall uni rankings.
It's not the end of the world though as usually employers care more about a good degree classification which you have a better chance of achieving if you go somewhere you enjoy and do the course that is best suited to you.
