Staying in halls 2nd year

Has anyone stayed in halls for the second year? And what was your experience like? I didn’t have a great experience this year with flatmates and stuff and am hoping to make friends in 2nd year halls.

Hi Anonymous,

I stayed in halls for second year and it was so much fun! I lived in a flat with a few of my friends from first year and a couple of other flatmates who had started university that year. The halls I was in had a mix of people across different year groups so I never felt out of place being in second year. If you think it's the right decision for you then definitely go for it! I think a lot of people would be considering halls for second year because they missed out on a proper first year experience (covid :frown:), so you won't be the only one!

Hope this helps!

Thank you!! That makes me feel so much better, unfortunately none of my friends this year fancied doing halls again with me but I hope it’s equally as good this Year!!

Hi I’m in a similar situation where I stayed home first year , I’m looking for other peoples experiences , will you be staying at halls still in second year ?
You definitely won’t be the only one especially considering how bad this year was

Hi, yes I will be! I did have plans to move with some people on my course but I don’t really know them that well so didn’t want to commit. Also doing a study abroad year so once I’m back for my last year all my friends will have graduated so hopefully can meet more people this year

Thats exactly how I feel! I feel like I have got no social life due to my course and I know it will only increase next year. Hopefully the whole new freshers experience will be fun!!

Heya,
I will be! I stayed in a self-catered studio room and was so anxious I did not make any effort at all to make friends which was the worst decision ever, especially this year, so I've written first year off and am hoping second year will be better! Going into catered halls on campus and hopefully will actually make friends.

Hey! I'm in a similar situation to you. First year I stayed at home due to COVID, next year I'm going to be moving into a shared house. BUT I know there are loads of people on my course who are going to be moving into halls for their 2nd year as they don't feel like they got the proper uni experience first year, and want to experience living in halls. A lot of people (myself included!) didn't really make any proper friends this year due to uni being largely online, so halls next year will be a great opportunity to meet loads of new people and have friends to go out and have fun with. There are loads of plusses to being in halls as well, it's generally cheaper and contracts tend to be shorter so you'll likely save money on accommodation as well. Don't worry about it, have fun and enjoy your second year!

Hi Anon,

There are lots of people in this situation this year!

I have known previous students who did not enjoy their first flat and stayed in halls for 2nd year and found it to be much more enjoyable! You may be more likely to find some like-minded people in 2nd year halls.

I hope this can offer you some reassurance.

Hi, can I ask how your second year went in halls? Were you allocated in a flat with other returning students as well? And were you able to make good friends this time round? Thanks
