University course help asap!!!!!!!!

Ok I really need some solid advice as I am at the end of year 12 and will be applying to university come sep/oct and obvs I can only apply for one subject.

I do Maths, French and Spanish and I am torn between these two courses which are very different from each other. Naturally it would be modern languages given I'm a linguist but on the other hand in terms of career (atm looking to go into business/finance) I thought I'd study finance at university.

The two courses I'm looking at are languages at Cambridge (probably Spanish & Arabic) but I have a feeling that if I'm not doing languages at Cambridge then I don't think I'd want to do it at any other university which is giving me this feeling that I'm only applying to Oxbridge bc of its name and reputation but at the same time i do really enjoy languages and wouldn't mind doing it for 4 years as a degree and I think the year abroad would be very beneficial as well.

On the other hand I'm looking at finance because in my future career I'd either like to go into business or finance so my degree will be related to it and I would probably study International Banking and Finance at CASS.

Now my problem is that I'm not sure which degree would be the most suitable. After having talked to various teachers they told me to go with my strengths at apply to Oxbridge languages then work my way into the profession through internships, connections and work experience. Other teachers have told me to do a finance degree because I will have the relevant skills and will find a job in the industry much quicker and I can always carry on with languages outside of uni.

I'm not sure what employers would prefer: an Oxbridge degree or a degree related to their industry. Also if I were to work abroad (which I want to) what would be more valued and recognised? Also given I'm not the strongest in Maths (I do enjoy it and work hard at it), am I better of doing the languages degree or enduring another 3-4 years doing a finance degree with more advanced level maths?

Essentially which degree is worth the debt and will give me a well paid job lol

Sorry for the long rant this is just such a difficult decision.

Thank you so much ))))
You can go into most roles in the financial services sector with any first degree. Having a degree in finance is not going to improve things provided that the degree in whatever else is also from a reputable (or target, for investment banking) university. There are a few areas in the financial services sector where a modern languages degree wouldn't be a suitable background, but equally a finance degree would not normally be sufficient background for those very quantitative areas (where usually they take on people with a maths/stats/engineering/CS/similar degree).

What areas in the financial sector would be suitable for a modern languages degree and what areas wouldn't? Are they still well paid?

Accounting, investment banking, etc, are all find for any first degree.

The areas you couldn't go into are the fields where you need a STEM degree, essentially. Quant finance, actuarial work etc.

Hey @bodomtoosh  I'm not sure that employers particularly recruit specifically for Oxbridge grads. There's no doubt it's really impressive to have a degree from Oxbridge but loads of students don't and still do brilliantly in their careers! A lot of the time I'd say a degree is what you make it, and that just going to a university with a fantastic reputation doesn't guarantee you a job in itself. Similar to what some of your teachers have recommended- it's also a lot to do with your character, how you use your time and how driven you are to get on in your chosen field. Do something you love and do it well, and everything else will fall in to place in due course career-wise.

Can I ask have you considered looking in to joint degrees? I graduated in 2018 and my degree was an integrated Masters in International Business with a Modern Language. I got to specialise in my chosen business area and language (I chose Marketing and French) and I came out of my degree with a Masters in a Business area, alongside time abroad and skills in the language I loved. Equally, you could do a similar degree and study Finance and Spanish/French perhaps? Just a thought if you're looking to keep your options broad and including subjects you enjoy in to Higher Education.

Also- I know you're looking for help ASAP on this but you have loooooads of time still! As you'll already know, Oxbridge applications are due in October but you've still got a couple of months to visit and attend open days/virtual events and weigh up your options. Take your time, keep chatting to your teachers/family/friends etc. and think carefully about how you're going to use your choices

If you're still around on TSR in October let us know what you decide!

hey you don't understand how much of a similar position I'm in rn, may I ask what you decided to do, why nd how you're finding it??? I'm so stuck whether to do economics and not get in at oxbridge and deal with loads and loads of maths or whether to do modern foreign languages with the year abroad and all the experience that it brings
id like to learn French, German, Italian, Spanish, dutch and portuguese fluently
I would do French and either German/spanish/italian as my main languages at Cambridge, with a minor in portuguese and I would do an extra language course in either German/spanish/italian.

I want to also go into finance and want a good salary, any help would be greatly appreciated : ) : )
