Summarisation of notes for memorisation?

Is summarisation of what I learnt from a textbook a good memorisation technique? I would read the textbook, cover the book then write down what I remember. Are there any better ways to remember large amounts of content than what I’m currently doing? I’ve noticed that this takes a very long time and it cuts my revision time.
making revision materials as you go along such as flashcards may be useful in cutting down on revision time, which may also help you memorise things as you go along. it could be useful though because it helps you spot where you're not as confident with the content. I think revision is most beneficial with a combination of techniques so it may also be useful to practise questions and as you get closer to exams, past papers.
