I want to do English and History at university but I don't do a level english

I'm in year 12 and I do History, Philosophy and Fine art. Back in early November I tried to switch from Philosophy to English combined but they wouldn't allow me to because I was a couple of weeks past the deadline. I think I want to study it further (which is why I asked) but every university I look at, apart from some lower grade ones, say I need to have done it at A level. I was told I'd probably be okay because I do two essay based subjects that are closely linked to English but I'm not sure. Has anyone got any experience with this? Is there anything I can do?
