Warwick vs Bath for Physics

I am unsure which university to pick between the two 😭
I think both of the campuses seem right for me and I do slightly prefer the Bath course but I often see people say Warwick is better.
For Bath : AAA 5 years MPhys (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics with professional placement, research placement or study abroad
Warwick: A*AA Physics with Astrophysics Bsc

Would i be missing out if i didn’t pick Warwick?
And is it true Bath is targeted less by employers or will my graduate prospects be similar?
The Bath placement system is probably the best in the UK - this adds enormously to your graduate CV and immediately puts you ahead of all of those without 'relevant experience'. Its also a specialist STEM Uni and because of this it is a very definite 'target Uni' for big employers.

No-one can define 'better Uni' - what is important is that its right for you. Check the optional units in every year of the course for both Unis and think about what you would actually choose if you went there. Enjoying what you are studying is one of the best parts of 'being at Uni'.

Only you can make this choice - but remember that you have until June to decide so there is no need to make a rushed decision.

Hello there!

We are delighted you are considering studying Physics with Astrophysics at Bath!

We are very proud of all of our Physics courses and how well they stand nationally; and indeed the course and the modules it offers is a very important consideration as your enjoyment of this will have a huge bearing on your overall university experience.

McGinger is correct in that we are very pleased to be one of the strongest universities in the UK with regards to the number of students who go on placements from all our courses in the year 2020/21 over two thirds of Bath students graduated having been on a placement or study year abroad. Having the chance to do a placement or study abroad period will not only give you an insight into what a career in research physics or physics within industry looks like for you, but also having 6 months to 1 year’s experience on your CV is likely to give you a solid competitive edge against graduates from other universities without this. Our Physics with Astro students go to a variety of different places on placement, including universities (e.g. Purdue, University of Singapore) and large organisations (e.g. CERN Geneva, Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, European Synchrotron Facility France, Dyson, Samsung, Rolls-Royce).

When I was a student at Bath a few years ago, I did a year-long research placement as part of my course personally I found this to be one of the most enjoyable parts of my degree, and it gave me so much experience to talk about when I was interviewed for a research job after graduating. I actually secured that job, and my employers told me that they loved the fact that I had done a placement, and that this put me above other candidates. At the time of writing (March 2023), 90% of Physics with Astro graduates from the 5 year course had secured employment or further study, within 15 months of graduating, showing that graduating from this course is likely to make you highly employable. Please check out out placement page to find out a little more! You might also find it helpful to chat to one or more of our current students, on Unibuddy. Several of these are studying Science courses and/or have done placements themselves, and so will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about that as well as chat to you about any broader aspects of student life at Bath, what the city is life, study tips etc 😊

However, there is far more to studying a university course than only your studies here are a few more things you might want to consider when choosing a university:

City Life & things to do Speaking for Bath, the city itself is beautiful as it is steeped in Georgian architecture and has plenty of outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens and places to walk; but is also a lively shopping hub, with 5 different supermarkets and several high street clothes shops, coffee shops and street food hubs all within walking distance of each other. You can take a look here to find out a bit more about the highlights of living in Bath as a student. Bath's campus itself is only a 10-15 minute bus journey from the city, and there are also even electric e-scooters available to pick up and ride up and down between city and campus if you want to have a bit more fun! Because of the close proximity, we offer support for students interested in part-time work or volunteering both on-campus and in the city, opening up more options than university-based roles such as student ambassador and campus bar and café work.

Clubs and societies Here at Bath we have over 180 groups and societies (my personal favourites as a student were Coffee Society, Curry Club and Baking Appreciation Society! 😊); most of which you can join for only £5 per year or semester; and there are also a huge range of sports on offer for you to try, whether you are interested in trying for the Olympics or just want to have a go with friends. Although the campus is used as a training ground for Team GB’s Olympic, Paralympic and Invictus teams, most sports facilities are also available to book for free for Bath students to use for a friendly match, game or session with friends.

Overall both Bath and Warwick are very good options for Physics, and so I am confident you will enjoy your experience whichever you choose. I hope some of the above will help you in your decision the very best of luck! 😊
