I don't understand whyonly a few interference fringes will be observed if the slit separation is small compared to the slit width a?

If I've assumed correctly however: there is an empirical relation that you should be aware of (ideally) that as the distances between slits decreases then the angle between fringes increases.

Hence, on the same board of some finite length, L, you can physically only see so many fringes in the same space as you decrease the distance between slits.
