Can someone please explain how I do this question, thanks.
You need a fact to determine k. So what does the distribution values sum to?
The notation means that the probability for x being a given number is kx if x is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, or 0 if x is something else.

E.g. the chance of x being 2 is 2k, and the chance of x being 7 is 0.

All probabilities add up to 1, so k + 2k + 3k + 4k + 5k = 1.

k can then be calculated with simple algebra.

I would personally have stopped at that point and left the OP to work out the explicit sum, but at least you stopped short of giving the final answer
