Funnily enough, in group assignments those ghosts do turn up, do the assignment then fade into obscurity again.
But in case this person of yours has absolutely never shown their face in class to the extent that you don't even know if they actually exist, you should talk to your tutor about getting paired with someone else or getting put into a group with another pair.
If the person doesn't turn up and you prep and do the exam all by yourself you shouldn't get penalised because you did the work.
Each university has its own rules about what to do when group assignments go wrong so just talk to your tutor about the prospects of you doing the entire exam on your own and what that means for your and the other person's grade
